Mateo is on the 5 man traveling taxi squad in LA .... the plot thickens. Apparently working on his OF skills.

Per SDUT he will be activated today.  Whoever gets optioned might just travel with team on taxi squad?  A little awkward...

Mateo could get thrown right in with a LH SP...  The team obviously has "too many" 2B type guys, but I'm excited to see what he can do & how Pads use him.

Kevin Acee
Ty France is the player optioned to the alternate site to make room for Jorge Mateo, who has been activated off the COVID-IL.

bit surprised ... must think more of Mateo's bat than I expected since they kept Olivares over France.
Clearly the Padres a leaning toward versatility, athletic ability, speed, defense.
Might be a clue to the futures of both France and Naylor ... both more limited and bat first options.

Hopefully this only happened because he was tearing it up at the alt. site.

If this kid becomes another steal and can get on base regularly....with his speed he could really be another game changer.

Super excited to see.....super excited about this team....and super excited considering we still have Gore and Campusano not far away and Abrams right behind them.

Ugggh.  With Perdomo & Patino now unavailable tonight, Quantrill & Strahm earmarked for Saturday, it would be a gamble to not add a P today with only Saturday's length in the pen.  Both Jerad Eickhoff & Bednar are available for a voluntary recall, but not sure if with "taxi squad".

But since knew in 4th inning of game in LA that pen was going to get heavily used, and with road game in Arizona, is it possible that someone in SD just starts driving to Arizona last night (or LA in time to make the plane?) to get recalled today?  Thinking Morejon/Baez.  Could also have this guy arrive today for activation tomorrow (roll Eickhoff up/down for just 1 game like last time).

Either way think it's time to option Perdomo down.

With Yates going down due to injury, expect Bednar and Morejon to come up; Perdomo will be optioned to alternate training site.  Morejon becomes the long man to take Quantrill's place in that role.   Or they could bring up Eickhoff vice Morejon.   I think they want to leave Patino in long relief until he shows more command.   Our starters have been good with the exception of Paddack's last failure.  Bednar hopefully makes Stammen irrelevant - pushed to way to the back of the bullpen.   If Stammen had anything left, he would have been brought in tonight when Yates was forced to come out.

Speculating that trade could be coming to beef up offense - OF and/or Catcher; look very futile out there with RISP.

Could we please see either Torrens or Campusano up and let them have a chance ?

Mejia is hitting .088 with a uppercut and I won't say anything about his behind the plate

Hedges is hitting .126 and while a much better receiver,,,,the average does not get it done

This is getting old watching the Padres only bat 8 per game vs any team in the NL West that seems to be able to get something out of their catcher.....Dodgers=Barnes ( .257), Rockies = Wolters(.195 ) , Giants=Tromp( .229 ), D-Backs=Vogt (.188).

All of these guys are hitting better than anything the Padres are putting behind the plate and with the exception of Barnes that isn't a high bar to clear

Could Torrens or Campusano really be any worse ?

Padres are getting close to the point where they need to make some hard decisions on players ... line-up. Making the playoffs is still the top priority ... not keeping players happy or waiting out players to turn their seasons around.

To than end, sending down Mejia (his value should be his hitting and he is not) and calling up Torrens (on the 40 man and did hit .300 in AA with good defense) can’t be a bad thing.

I am also leaning towards recalling Naylor (a LHH to spell Pham) and live with the defense to get some offense ... send down Olivares (who has not hit in August). Pham is a question mark ... worse in August than in July ... spending a lot of time at DH not LF ... and since he hit #4 and the Padres are sitting 29th out of 30 teams for hitting 4th ...he needs to move out of that important slot.

What could be tougher is the pitching staff ... and believing in whomever gets a call-up. If Yates goes IL (likely given the issue is elbow and has not rebounded with rest) and then factor in the very bad work by Hill and Guerra ... minimum of three call-ups. Add that even though Guerra is out of options ... he as been so ineffective ... can they afford to carry him if really trying to make the payoffs without the rest of the pen clicking. Replace those three and have not considered Stammen (not going anywhere for sometime) and Perdomo. Not that much depth at the alternative site ... remember they are there because the current roster was selected because they were perceived better.

Since this is a RP exercise ... Bednar - Baez - Morejon for Yates - Guerra - Hill? IF Quantrill fails in his SP audition ... back to the pen and time for Gore?

21 games still a small sample size (that could be good or bad) but in the remaining 39 games not a long time to “work out” a player’s problem ... while trying to make the playoffs. Going to be some tough calls.

Someone up for Kirby, but feel like if they were going to option Perdomo, they would have done it before going to Arizona.  But they could have sent Morejon from SD by car the next AM after the LAD game...

Yates spot ... for now ... might just go to one of the pitchers on the traveling taxi squad ... then adjust when they return to SD next Wednesday. Eickhoff?

Might see a number of roster moves when they return.

In the all time "I told you so category".....

MLB considering expanding 60-man player pools by up to 15 more players.... First and foremost, as Norris explains, the current approach has left too few players around to participate in alternate site games

"Oh, really" ?!!?!?   The thing that made utterly no sense to me was that it was OK to have up to 60 guys in the re-start of training camp in close proximity (I realize they used 2 separate sites, but guys were going back & forth between them), but then once the season started that number had to drop down to 30 at the very most?  Most teams were signifcantly < 60 total, but 30-man active roster, so Pads had like 25 guys total at Alternate site minus 3, now up to 5, when they are on the road (taxi squad).

Pretty obvious from before day 1 this was going to be an issue.   Hope they do expand it.  Secondary reason is to add more prospects to the "can be traded" pool; but for any team below 60 like Pads, they really could have done this anyway... add a guy, then trade him the next day.
