30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters
Quote from Brian Connelly on August 11, 2020, 11:05 amStrategy around taxi squad will evolve as season moves on: now 5 instead of 3, but 28 man active vs 30, and guys have been added to 40-man. For example, Pads next have 5 games "truly" on road: 3 @ Rox, then 2 @ Rangers. Torrens will be there of course, but guessing they take the more veteran "now on roster" guys away from training site for the trip: Almonte & Eickhoff. That's 3.
But then guessing they go with 1 more "short" & 1 "long" RP; maybe Bednar & Morejon or Baez... maybe the SP who just pitched 4-5 IP a day or 2 before the road trip...
The travelling taxi squad is now less for sudden Covid emergence (which would probably postpone games); it's the guy who would get recalled to fill a pitching or injury hole not having to travel on a commercial flight. Weird thing is a guy optioned down or injured would probably just stay with the team until they get back to SD.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 11, 2020, 11:47 amI'm ready for Mateo to take Profars spot.
I mean.....he can not hit any worse.I don't know about his defense..we might lose a little there, but he also gives you even more
speed.I hope we aren't rolling with Profar instead of a better option due to his salary or because he is "Prellers guy".

Quote from WindsorUK on August 11, 2020, 12:07 pmIs Profar REALLY that bad?
He seems to be getting on base and scoring runs. Works the count at a higher clip than any other teammate.
Granted, I've not seen him play as a Padre. Is his defense up to scratch?
But like you say Mr. P, if he is being kept by AJ just because he's one of " his guys", not a good idea in a 60 game season.

I assume Cronenworth will be getting full time reps at 2B for the foreseeable future?

Quote from fenn68 on August 11, 2020, 12:47 pmProfar is doing fine defensively at 2B and actually looked comfortable in LF. However, at some point those long AB (with some walks) actually have to turn into hits. Not sure getting rid of him is the move yet ... the utility role on the bench is OK.
I see the appeal of jumping over to Mateo .... and by reputation a very good defensive option with 80 speed. He too is a big question mark with the bat ... hence out of minor league options without tasting the ML at age 25 (8 minor league seasons).
With the emergence of Cronenworth .... looking like a full time 2B going forward who gives the defense and ... worst case .. hit as well as Profar / Mateo ... are we just debating a string of bench options among Mateo, Profar, Garcia, Olivares, and France? (Actually that is a better scenario than in previous years).
With injuries, COVID and not having the next layer of back-up at the alternative site really ready for a ML playoff run ... strategically have to take the options choice over a DFA/release option ... that sends me to either Olivares or France since at least they could come back if needed. Need to preserve all the bodies they can given the uncertainty.

I had postulated that keeping Mateo on the IL all year might be a strategy not knowing if MLB has some rules that might force their hand. Not sure the trigger but Mateo is NOT injured and effectively rehabbing from COVID ... old rules would suggest a 20 day limit that is coming soon (actually it may already be here). Plus, the way Cassavell did his write-up ... Padres don’t appear to be taking the hide him for the season route.

Machado’s brother in law and “best friend” ... guess the Padres are getting desperate to get Manny on track.

Brilliant .... it worked.
First AB after the announcement Manny SLAMS!
Does he have any other relatives we can sign?

If it's a 20 GAME limit, that would coincide with the end of the LAD series. That would be a logical "add" point; before a 5 game "road" trip. The (up to) 5 man Taxi squad going to Colorado will probably travel up to LA tonight or tomorrow AM to travel with the team anyway. Mateo could join that group. If not required, I'd rather "ride" the current roster until they return home, which would be 25 games.
But I absolutely think the Pads want & frankly need to look at Mateo & see what they've got: 1) Prior to trade deadline, and 2) with an eye towards next year. Even with being dramatically more patient & higher OBP, the Pads are still WAY too HR dependent to score runs. Mateo may be less important for the man on 2B in extras than I thought, but imagine this scenario: Tied game or down 1 run in 7th inning, our 1st batter walks. No matter who it is (OK, not Tatis), Mateo dramatically increases the odds of getting into scoring position with no outs. Could dramatically enhance possibility of tie or lead with 2-3 innings left; the spot in the order might not even bat again; could just pinch run & then sub a player in for whoever came out. It's pretty easy to imagine his speed directly impacting a game. Olivares has good speed too, but not 80 scale...
As I've stated before, I think the "PTBNL" that we traded to get our #15 (most other teams would be top 10) prospect will wind up being a top 30 prospect who will be Rule 5 eligible this year like Jeisson Rosario or Hudson Potts.

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2020, 12:27 pmWell Preller is pretty good in judging minor league players ... so Mateo’s overall value might be a bit higher. I do think his speed / defense / versatility will be an asset to the ML roster ... still cautious about his offense.
Plus, not just focusing in on 2020, he has 5 more control years and likely Profar is not likely to return after 2020 ... and looking as though Cronenworth is solidifying a starting 2B role ... Mateo can play plus defensive back-up SS/2B as needed which allows not messing with Cronenworth sliding over to SS.
For me, that adds up to making sure the Padres keep him ... and if the rules require to activate him at the expense of someone ... need to do it.
The PTNL will be interesting (if it does not become CASH CONSIDERATIONS). Agree on a talent basis a Potts or Rosario might fit. The one hedge is the fact that Mateo was out of minor league options which, under most circumstances, lowers the trade value for a minor league type. Given that ... might see the return maybe more an E. Ruiz type.
