Yates spot ... for now ... might just go to one of the pitchers on the traveling taxi squad ... then adjust when they return to SD next Wednesday. Eickhoff?

Might see a number of roster moves when they return.

Yes.  One of the challenges this season is you have to balance the development of esp the SP's at the alternate site throwing regularly building innings & getting to work in game-ish conditions vs. having the best option(s) available on long road trips on the taxi squad.  Teams are NOT going to fly a guy commercially to get somewhere as an injury fill in like a normal season...

I speculated that because of Paddack's short start in LA, they could have told someone to "start driving" to Arizona b/c reachable by car.  We'll see today if they did that, but I highly doubt it, b/c Quantrill, Strahm, & even Patino are all available for multiple innings today.

I think "decision day" might be the next off day on 8/24.  It's the exact midpoint of the season, it comes at home after a day game with the next series also at home.  Make samples "long as can" before making decisions, especially re: trades.

A lot (at least on the pitchers) depends on how used and effective they are over the next four AWAY games. Once in SD easy to make switch outs and not wait for the results of five more consecutive games which could be a strain on an over used staff.

Not sure how the trade deadline factors in ... but making moves on the 19th or 20th allows for players to be optioned and serve their 10 days and recalled (unless there is some exception for holes due to trades) if a trade goes down with someone on the active roster.

Preller has a lot to consider in the next few days.

It's a matter of when and not if.  Agree with all the potential moves proposed by Fenn with the exception of Guerra going down - substitute Perdomo.  Lot of criticism for Mejia's catching skills but he's caught all of Lamet's games and I believe all of Davies' games and these were some of the best efforts we've seen from pitchers this year.  Easier than catching Paddack and Richards?  Certainly not on the level of Hedges defensively but few are but not a Gary Sanchez any longer - hits have not fallen in for him but less futile at the plate than Hedges.  Torrens needs to be given a chance and I hope Naylor gets it in gear.  Still, we need more major-league ready talent and experience than we currently have on our roster.  Let's see what the front office does in the next week.   Surprise pitcher so far - Pierce Johnson.  Surprise hitter so far - Wil Myers (time to trade him? He's also been much better defensively than past years).

Optioning Perdomo vs. DFA of Guerra makes sense ... both have been miserable this month and for the season. ERA of 10+ in 7-8 innings can be misleading .. but in these cases probably not. At least for now, keep control of both and Perdomo did have a decent 2019 ERA of 4.00 / 72 innings.

I have been locked in on Guerra's upside and expected a lot more in 2020. His velocity is there ... the movement is there ... the command is not and he is getting hit hard at times in his 7.1 innings. Only 24 so still a lot to like. IF you took out the Aug 2nd game vs. COLO ... not too bad.

Guerra has the stuff...he just needs experience and time to learn how to pitch.

Unfortunately he may not get it in Padre Brown.

Perdomo has pitched 435 innings at the major league level and another 406 in the minors over 10 years.  Guerra has pitched a total of 37.1 innings, 16.0 of which has been at the major league level in only 2 years.  Yet if you look at some of the advanced pitching statistics by Fangraphs you can see that Guerra's barrel rate is much less than Perdomo's as well as his FIP-.  There are flashes of brilliance there that Perdomo will never achieve.  I've watched every pitch Guerra has thrown this year and see something new, something better in the way he pitches even if the location and results aren't always there.  His calmness, his arm speed, his starting to work off his 99-100 mph fastball more with relatively softer 88-91 stuff.  Hard to learn a new trade, especially pitching, in the majors but the tools are there even if the results currently are not.  Got to be patient with this guy because he could be special.  With Yates out, maybe for the rest of the year, going to have to throw him in situations that will certainly test him and his future development.

If they can nurse Mejia and hope he turns into anything they can stick with Guerra and let him learn....he has the upside while Mejia doesn't...bring up Torrens or Campusano and let Mejia figure it out at the Alt Site....if nothing else his hitting......  .088 does not belong in the Major Leagues.

Do think they will try to hang onto Guerra as long as the can ... while still trying to make the playoffs with the best options in the pen.

Hopefully Guerra gets his game together sooner than later and the Padres don't have to cross that bridge. Fortunately in 2020 there are 15 pitchers on the staff .. so some flexibility to bury him as #15 if he is not performing and hopefully the #15 is not needed all that much ... if it is there are some bigger issues with #1-14. Better he should get his game together and he is a valuable arm down the stretch.

With Yates, probably, out for a long time (maybe the season) ... and good chance of not returning in 2021 .... need Guerra's potential to vie for late inning stops.

The Padres have placed reliever Kirby Yates on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, the team announced. His roster spot will be taken by right-handed pitcher David Bednar, who has been recalled.

Campusano has a chance to be our best home grown catcher ever - as a hitter, a combination of the best qualities of Benito Santiago and Sandy Alomar, although Alomar did his damage ironically with Cleveland.  Unlike Santiago, who was one of the fastest catchers around, Campusano has no speed but he absolutely punishes the ball and has an exceptional walk to strikeout ratio; he was great in all the games I saw at Lake Elsinore last year.  Got a ways to go before he compares favorably to either defensively, however, but he can be average.  Probably see him start at AAA next year, if there is a 2021 minor league season, and how he performs early may determine how soon he is promoted.

Mejia was the #1 ranked catching prospect in the minors when we made the trade with Cleveland but many doubted that catcher would be his position.  Few, however, doubted that he wouldn't hit since he once had a 33 game hitting streak in the minors.  Sure, he was a chaser, but most felt he'd be around a .275 hitter with 15-20 HRs at some position - maybe OF or DH in the AL - hard to do at any level.  I think he's greatly improved defensively over what he was but has not looked good offensively.  Agree he needs to go down and get a refresh on his approach at the plate.  Keep that head in there longer or develop a better timing mechanism; whatever it takes.  I think that hitting skill exists but it's not shown up so far.
