Based on the renderings I have seen, the brackets are set once the playoffs start.

From what the local media / team is suggesting is that the deals for Ray and Mize at the deadline were critical even if they have not met expectations. The consensus is that the "chaos" approach to SP behind King and Buehler would have collapsed sooner than later. The innings and stabilization for the two established starter did make a difference to more winning. In this case, even bad is good!
