2026 Padre Season
Quote from fenn68 on August 16, 2026, 3:45 pmAdam is going to be an interesting wild card down the stretch.
He was dominate in Apr-May with 20 innings and only 2 ER. In the period 2022-25 he pitched the 10th most innings for RP and had the 4th best ERA (2.07). Problems started in Jun and ended up with the IL stint with a shoulder muscle strain.
Padres have been careful not rushing Adam ... I guess just started throwing ... but IF he is healed and gets out to a rehab at the end of next week he could get near a month (if needed) to get back to his former form. An Adam at or near peak form would be a significant factor in the stretch and playoffs ... considering the recent struggles of Peralta and Estrada and then unproven Morgan. Lengthens the quality of the pen cutting off rallies earlier. Maybe a strategic IL to make room.
=================================
In the same vein ... Adam is 35 and coming off an injury ... FA after the season. Wonder the motivation by the Padres to re-sign him. Wonder the market for a 35 year old coming off injury from other teams?
Every report suggest Adam and the Padres have a good relationship ... money is always a point but maybe on a creative incentive based deal Padres can retain Adam ... Adam can stay comfortable with medical team and avoid the unknown of the FA market for a 35 year old set-up RP.
For the right contract I would re-sign him and maybe explore trade of maybe Estrada for an upgrade elsewhere on the roster.

– Considering how barren the free-agent market is this winter, little surprise that MLB teams have been heavily scouting Japan this summer for talent.
Hiromi Itoh of the Nippon Ham Fighters, along with pitcher Hiroto Takahashi of the Chunichi Dragons, and third baseman Teruaki Sato and pitcher Hiroto Saiki of the Hanshin Tigers, are attracting the most interest.
Bet Preller is already in the hunt consider the SP need in 2027. On the other hand ... does the barren market make it more likely King opts out? Padres exercise the $14MM on Pivetta?
===========================================
San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill made himself a cool $5 million by reaching his 500th plate appearance on Friday, which adds $1 million to the next five years of his contract.
It increases his original nine-year deal from $135 million to a minimum of $140 million.
Worth it!
===============================================
– The Milwaukee Brewers paid infielder Luis Rengifo $3.5 million to become their everyday third baseman, only to give up on him after 57 games, and release him in June when he was slashing .205/280/.254 with no homers and 19 RBI.
The Padres decided to give him a shot, and now he’s become a vital part of their turnaround, slashing .318/.414/.447 with three homers and 12 RBI in 25 games.
“It’s part of baseball,” Rengifo said.
Another win by Preller.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 16, 2026, 5:38 pmHope he doesn't price himself out of the Padres range as a free agent. Further, need him to continue his good/clutch hitting for the remainder of the 2026 season and in the playoffs.

He and Rengifo give us A LOT of flexibility.

About 10 days ago the report was he was taking swings at the AZ complex and near a rehab assignment ... then silence. So only can speculate but his injury was an oblique ... maybe swinging made him regress? The Padres may not be in a hurry given how they have been winning and they seem to really like what Bowen is doing (he is likely the first out if Taylor is added now). Maybe slow walking the return to Sep 1 when the roster expands.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 17, 2026, 11:45 amToday, finally, the Padres new ownership has been unanimously approved! I expect a press release shortly which will indicate what direction the team will head for the remainder of the season and into the shutdown/lockout period. I'm hoping they are more like Peter Seidler than his brothers, et. al., although it hasn't been that bad considering what could have happened.

Would not expect much in the way of detail on the future ... initially ... more along the lines of continuing the great legacy and direction of the Siedler family.
Did say Greupner and Preller will remain in place.
I expect they don't want to do much to upset the apple cart right now during a playoff run ... actually not much they can physically do ... so bide their time.
One action that I expect they have to make is who is the "controlling" owner who is the main person working with the league ... does not have to be Feliciano for the day to day.
Maybe the first indications of their plans will come in November as the Padre (and other teams) address FA ... will they make a strong effort to re-sign / sign players in Nov or bide their time until post-CBA approval ... then who knows.

From yesterday's DFR ...
Samad Taylor made his first rehab appearance and went 0-for-3 with a walk in four plate appearances. Taylor has been on the injured list since July 7 with an oblique strain.
