Hopefully, Giolito can do better, but he hasn't really done anything either.  Not having Pivetta and Musgrove has really hurt this year.  Really frustrating season to date.

I'm not in favor of AJP unloading more prospects for short term rentals, when we aren't going to make a deep post-season run anyway.  Save the prospects AJP, let their value increase.

Wonder what the real discussions are in the Front Office (Preller, ownership) about the next moves. I understand there is no upside to being negative publicly but from a strategic / planning they have to be honest with themselves.

With 9 games pre trade deadline ... with weaker teams: MIA three games (53-51 on a 9 game losing streak); COLO two games (41-63); and SF four games (42-60) the Padres MIGHT start looking good but that would be a mirage. Not unrealistic they could go 7-2 and hit the trade deadline 2 games over .500 and move right into a neck and neck run for the playoffs.

Reality check ... look at the past two months ... come to grips with a SP staff of King and a collection of BELOW average SP who can't go 5 innings (and nothing to suggest any of them will make a turnaround) ... one of the poorest set of prospects to be used as trade chips ... few impact SP on the market (and other teams can easily out bid the Padres).

Even if the Padres do go 7-2 and move to a winning record ... think it would be hard to justify trading out of the limited asset pool (and the future) for some immediate short term add that will not likely even land them in the playoffs.

Maybe a bad run in MIA is enough to put the front office on a sell track ... early enough to allow Preller to make moves before buyers start filling their needs from other clubs. However, if the Padres get hot ... maybe a "stand pat" approach is taken since being a buyer of anyone significant (e.g. SP) may not be feasible.

The clock is ticking.

Having both King and Pivetta potentially in the 2027 rotation and maybe a healthy Musgrove (all on significant contracts) does a lot to set a starting rotation but consumes a good chunk of payroll flexility.
3. How much season is lost? If Preller assumes a major chunk .... how does anyone value a player that is only controlled for 2027 in a trade? If you only get a half season ... is he still worth the prospect level of a full season?
4. New changes in CBA may move control from 6 years for FA to 5 ... that would make Sheets a FA opening another hole. For players like King / Pivetta would a salary cap shave their opportunities for better contracts or would a salary floor improve their chances? Might make sense to opt in for 2027 ... let the dust settle ... make their move for 2028.

GMs have to process all that in the next week ... opt outs / FA to be have until November.

I have changed my view and now believe there is a very good chance King, Pivetta, Peralta, and Matsui opt in. If Musgrove returns ... along with the pen except Morejon / Adam ... that is a representative pitching staff coupled with the core offense (now performing closer to pre-season expectations) may just keep the Padres in playoff contention in 2027. Maybe only "minor" tinkering by Preller.

So, for 2027, always needs more SP and likely will need some fill for LF/1B/DH given the FA to be array. Will Preller have this in mind if adding at the deadline and goes for more than "rentals"? Preller always speaks to balancing the current need with 3 year and 5 year plan in his dealings ... so yes?
