2026 Padre Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on June 16, 2026, 6:26 amThe situation with the rotation going forward is why we just can't trade Mendez,Mayfield or Schoolcraft.
They won't help in '27 but in '28 and beyond they could be 3/5 of the rotaion.
I would be "OK" with trading Mendez in a package if it meant getting back a SP with at least control through 2027.
But,with the lockout looming,my guess is Preller might actually prefer a rental so as to not waste a year of control in 2027.
I just hope we don't trade any of these 3,or Salas & Wideman, for a rental.
How does a lockout affect a players contract exactly?
If 2027 is completely wiped out I assume that still counts towards a year of the players contract?
Even if not playing or being paid?
Is this right?

Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2026, 8:28 amMy understand the service time earned in 2027 will be a negotiated item with the new CBA but in the past playing any games in the lockout year counts as a full year. Should note that the players' union is already asking for the six control years to be reduced to five.
During the lockout the players will not get paid and only get the portion for the part of the season played ... but that too is negotiated as part of the new CBA.
The "guess" on the duration of any lockout will impact the judgement of every GM and every player ... combine that with the unknown of the new rules on contracts, CBT penalties, potential for a salary floor, etc. Add that, as I understand, FA/options exercised occur about 5 days after the end of the world series but the CBA ends on Dec 1 and the lockout begins (probably) ... players at that point can't negotiate or sign. That short window does not make for a good marketplace for either the GM or players ... so likely a good chance of no action and wait for some resolution.
On trade deadline moves ... rentals make the most sense since lower cost in terms of prospects. Players on multi-year deals would have trouble getting a mutually agreed value given the unknown of how much time is lost in a lockout. A player on a 2 year deal is worth more if he plays 2 years but less if plays only 1 year / 2 months.
The is a lot of issues that may lead to inactivity at both the trade deadline and prior to a new CBA. Could be a very boring winter start of 2027. Minors should still play (without 40 man ML roster players) ... so something to watch and a vehicle to develop players for the return of ML season.

Unfortunately it seems we’re going into battle unarmed

Quote from fenn68 on June 17, 2026, 8:04 amOther than April when they went 18-7 ... boosted quite a bit by hitting by Laureano, Andujar, and France ... even Campusano ... this has been a sub .500 team.
March (1-4 ... -3)
April (18-7 ... +11)
May (13-15 ... -2)
June (5-9 ... -4)
Total (37-35 ... +2)
The past two games have given no indication that the losing ways will not continue and the team will end June sub-.500. Beyond the total lack of offense ... have not seen any playoff quality SP in a month. King and Vasquez seem to have lost command and are struggling to last 5 innings. Little coming from Giolito and Canning. Basically a mid to bottom rotation staff at this point.
No hitting ... middling SP ... formula to falling behind well before getting to the quality RP and leads to losses.
One or two players may turn it around but that will not be enough when all they have now is Tatis and a bullpen ... a bullpen that may implode with over use at some point.
Will the last week of the month vs ATL and LAD be the nail in the coffin for this Padre season?

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 17, 2026, 2:20 pmWell, I think we found our left fielder for next year.
Just put Taylor back there and bat him ninth and roll….hell maybe lead him off?Sure hope he keeps this up the rest of the year it would really help to have him in Leftfield producing at his cost the next couple seasons.

Quote from fenn68 on June 18, 2026, 6:24 amNot sure how to analyze this but in June the Padres (6-9) are:
23rd in WHIP (1.42)
22nd in BAA (.266) BUT
3rd best ERA (3.57)!
Sure being last in hitting drives the losing recored but how can a team be that ineffective in putting men on base and still have one of the best ERA in the ML?
They do have one of the best defenses but has to be more. Is the pitching just "clutch" or are the pitchers just off then on within each inning? Just hard to lock in a reason over the 15 games in June. A function of the opponents not have a long line-up of quality hitters ... i.e. can't hit with RISP?
IF the latter is the reason ... and if the SD pitchers don't start keeping men off the bases ... they may have a painful run when they start bumping into teams with strong / deep offenses. See ATL/LAD coming soon but in June ATL is slumping on offense (so maybe workable) and next TEX has not been hitting.

As of right now all of the teams we play in the 23 games before the break are within a half game of playoff position or better. It's a very tough stretch.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 19, 2026, 5:54 amWe will have to do something with German Marquez soon.
Not sure I want him in the rotation even as inconsistent as Giolito and Canning have been.
Saw the Phillies were looking for a back end Starter.
Trade them Marquez for an A Ball prospect

I think they have until July 2 +/- to make the call. Don't think I have seen enough from any of Marquez, Canning, or Giolito to really care who they move ... projecting one will be substantially worse than the others is just a roll of the dice.
If no injury suddenly occurs ... wonder if any one of them would get claimed off waivers (they are all low cost for the rest of the season) but knowing the Padres have to move one ... doubt any team would make a trade given their performance.
About a week later Waldron will put the Padres in the same spot again as his 30 day rehab ends. Although he may return as a RP ... at the expense of Marinaccio (out of options) who actually could generate some minor trade interest. (I guess if they wanted to go with one of the starters to long relief ... Marinaccio may be moved with the return of Marquez).
