2026 Padre Season

It would be a mistake to conclude based on the last two months of 2025 and the first two+ months that Machado will never hit again BUT
If would be a mistake to ignore the effects of aging on everyone ... and diminishing production.
Reality will play out for Manny but I do think he will hit better (almost has to) than he is now doing but have real doubts he will consistently hit at his past levels (about 20% above league average wRC+). Maybe a few more seasons settling in the "average" MLB range but starting a continuing decline. Probably get teased with a hot streak now and again but probably not season long production.
I guess the debate at this point is futile ... since Manny is going nowhere for a long time. Have to start paying close attention going forward and begin developing strategies to compensate IF he starts a major decline.

Acee put out an article talking about Manny working with the hitting coach Lynch brought up in the other thread. Apparently Manny changed his mechanics after working with him in the offseason and is now trying to get his old mechanics back in place now. I'm sure it's hard to change your mechanics in season. He probably will bounce back a bit. However, going back to the end of last season he's been a sub .200 hitter for almost his last 500 PAs now. It's to the point where it's hard to dismiss it as just a slump. I think it's fair to be concerned.

Oh I'm not suggesting no one should be concerned...it's just my opinion that this isn't already "the end" of a good Manny Machado as many are suggesting....not just here, but everywhere.
Age is/will definitely be a factor from this point forward.
Maybe I'm fooling myself but as I said I think he will rebound and he still has 2-3 good years before the end is in sight.

Interesting in regards to swing trigger. I certainly noticed in many things that as I've gotten older, the brain still fires out information but it takes mouth/hands/legs a little bit longer to initiate words or movement.
Certainly be worth Manny re-setting his hands to initiate a quicker path to the ball. I see that he's stepped deeper into the box. While that may be of some assistance, it's his ability to get his hands through, and bat to ball, that has made him such a great hitter. Doing it in season must be nearly impossible, hence the Majors worst average.
Maybe blasphemous but would it be worth sending him on a "rehab" assignment to Elsinore for a week? I know that's an impossibilty but would that give him the time/ reps v. live pitching that could re-set his swing?

Griffin Canning has 8 starts, 37 IP, a 1.57 WHIP, a 7.17 ERA, 39 K's, 22 BB and an 0-5 record.
German Marquez has 6 starts, 30 IP, a 1.45 WHIP, a 5.76 ERA, 19 K's, 12 BB and a 3-2 record.
Other than the strikeouts, I think Marquez is the better pitcher in 2026. When is he due back from the IR? Because when he's ready, I'm slotting him into Cannings spot.

Padres will have a tough time selecting the survivors since Marquez has done well in his rehabs (should be ready) but poor prior in the ML ... Canning and Giolito have not performed well (neither has shown much command) ... and then lurking and "ready" in a couple of weeks Waldron ... likely only two will be on the ML roster but none have minor league options, so two will be likely DFA.
None of the four have "earned" a slot ... so the Padres will have to gamble on the two that might get their acts together later in the season based on ???????.

I'd LOVE to see Waldron find the command he had on his knuckler from a few years back. There was about a 14 start stretch(???) where he was as good as anyone.
And surely Giolito HAS to find his command, doesn't he?
If their pasts are anything to go by though, gotta believe Marquez and Giolito get their acts together and prove most reliable.
I'd be happy with those 2 behind King, Vasquez, and Buehler. Should hopefully get stronger into the summer and give the bullpen arms a rest. Regardless of who stays or goes, if our $100 millionaires don't start producing " like the back of their baseball cards", it will all be for naught.
