If this team implodes, and there doesn't appear to be any signs that they won't, I can't imagine Feliciano and Jones keeping Preller around. This abomination is 100% of his making. Keep in mind on the pitchers (baring new injuries) Giolito, Canning, and Buehler can't be optioned from the starters and neither can Marinaccio out of the pen ... the other RP Padres probably would not want to option (the ones you could) for any of the arms coming off the IL.

So, Preller going to have to make some tough calls on players to DFA/release. Note that he cannot trade any FA signed last winter until Jun 15, so that hampers some of his trade options I guess or may delay activating Marquez and Waldron.

Side: Brito is completing his rehab in SA and will come off the 60 day IL soon ... has an option so likely assigned to EP as a SP ... but that will require a 40 man roster move as an offset. All does tie together.

Offense (OPS) in May was 29th in MLB (.616) slightly lower than Mar-Apr sending YTD down to .656 (also 29th). "Average" for ML teams is just over .700 this season so far.

Pitching (ERA) in May was 13th in MLB (3.59). That sends YTD down to 3.92 (13th). Breaking down the YTD: Starters 4.63 (24th), Relievers 3.07 (2nd).

Long season to go but being 29th in offense and 13th in pitching does not spell a playoff team. The current record is somewhat a product of a string of remarkable late inning comebacks early in the season ... that seems to have come to and end.

Still expect the offense to materially improve based on the "stars" rebounding ... but cautious on the "others" siding backwards. Pitching has me worried ... SP is weak (King and Vasquez in May were more like mid-rotation SP) and the rest are less than average. RP has been the strength but are being use heavily and we have seen that level of work tends to burn out enough of the arms to make the overall less effective. At this point nothing coming to really help and frankly nothing to trade to get a major boost with multiple adds.

June is going to be pivotal.

Honestly, it feels rare for a team to feature so many hitters performing so far below their career norms across the board at once, and to result in an offense so comprehensively inept against everyone and everything they face. It's not a secret that our hitters have been shocked more than a few times about how they've been attacked by pitchers, which speaks directly to the kind of prep they're receiving. And say what you will about blaming hitting coaches, but this staff has been completely incapable of helping our hitters adjust and correct.

We're coming off the worst offensive month for runs scored since 2017. You have to go back to 2015 to find a worse month. And now we've started June with one of the most frustrating offensive games we've seen all season. Feels hard to disagree with Kyle at this point.

Instead of patching holes in a sinking ship, I wouldn't be surprised to see salaries moved, in order to create more flexibility going forward. And at some point, start gathering prospects ourselves!

After this season, 4 more years at $12.3MM per year.

Cronenworth was originally hit in the head on April 18 and has yet to resume baseball activities ... 6 weeks and not recovered is a bad sign that may suggest a much longer absence.

I never want to see a player get injured and potentially finish his career ... but in the worst case scenario might see a buyout for "early retirement" ... no idea if they have insurance on Croney.

I do want Croney back ... hopefully at this 2025 level which was good for ML 2B. Would put Tatis back in RF for 2027 ... remember with Castellanos gone and in 2027 Laureano, Andujar, and France FA will already be seeking hitters without anything coming in house. Add the need to replace 5 FA pitchers and potentially 4 more who could opt out ... finding a upgrade for Croney would not be the highest priority.
