2026 Padre Season

Trout is owed 37 million plus from 2027-030 and his production, when healthy and on the field, is only a shadow of what he was in his prime. Much rather do an extension for Laureano, who brings a lot of grit and fire to the line-up since we have no sure-fire OF prospects waiting in the wings, even if you consider Jase Bowen and Samad Taylor. Wideman is likely our best OF prospect but is several years away at best, although crossing my fingers on McCoy.

Can't see the Padres favorites to trade for Trout (if indeed anyone is trading for Trout). Major remaining contract cost and over the past few years ... injury history (sure reasonable healthy in 2025-26 but only getting older and that does not suggest great health going into his late 30s.)
Looking forward, Padres have over half of their 26 man roster potentially FA after the season ... a lot of them low cost for their productivity. Just scraping up the money to re-sign / replace them with the same productivity will be a challenge given the built in contract / arbitration increases for those under contract. Made an earlier guess that to bring back this same team would increase the payroll by near $70MM.
However, can't ever say a zero percent chance ... but Angels would have to eat most of Trout's contract, take some of the "over paid" Padres (Cronenworth, Matsui, Peralta), and accept marginal prospects (really except for Salas that is all the Padres have) ... maybe one plus prospect. Angels would have to be desperate to do that. Frankly if they really wanted t0 deal Trout ... be they could find a better trade partner in PHIL or NYM ... at least have to eat less contract and maybe get better prospects.

Padres face some very good pitchers on this road trip and when they return to face the Dodgers at PETCO. It sure would be nice for the offense to break out otherwise team could go into a sustained losing streak. LETS GO PADRES!!

I have an idea. How about AJP bringing up RHP Evan Fitterer to replace Canning, who is starting Tuesday against the Dodgers and send Canning down?
Also, perhaps it would be better to trade Waldron, rather than DFA him, for some minor leaguers especially pitchers. AJP needs to build up the farm system.

Can't send Canning down (without his consent).
Might be able to trade Waldron but any team seeing the Padres in need of SP wanting to trade Waldron will maybe offer a non-prospect or a real deep (Rookie / DSL type). Padres (for now) will likely keep Waldron as a long RP and back-up SP ... at least until someone in the minors looks promotable or Pivetta / Musgrove return (2+ months?).
I would not give up that quickly on Canning ... good 1st start ... good beginning to his second start (that that one ugly inning) ... the bad 3rd start. Moreover last year (before the injury) he had 16 starts and a 3.77 ERA and that would put him mid-rotation on the current Padres.
Need to see more of Fitterer ... 25 but not a great minor league history of success and was not protected by Miami last winter and signed as a minor league FA. Never a high Marlin prospect. Would not write him off ... just need to see more in AAA.

I feels like Pable Reyes (.310 .426 .517 at El Paso) would hit better than Manny right now 🙁

Beginning to think we will not be seeing either Musgrove or Pivetta during 2026 (at least as EFFECTIVE pitchers).
Musgrove had his TJ surgery in Oct 2024 ... now 19 months later has been shut down again (per 5/9 report) after "light tossing". Even for TJ that is a long time without returning to pitching. Worry another surgery may be on the horizon knocking him out until 2027 (his last contract year).
Pivetta got pulled on April 12th with flexor strain and has yet to start a throwing regiment after 5 weeks. When ready to rehab should be a few months to build up to ML readiness. Have to worry that the end of a flexor strain is surgery or if returns creates a possibility of a relapse. All this will weigh on his Player Option ($14MM) for 2027.
Lastly, should we have more concern about Cronenworth? He was hit in the head on April 18 ... battle through it until the IL list on May 5 ... one month after the hit in the head and not performing any baseball activities. So not a "normal" mild concussion where players return in the 7 day IL window.
