Well that would be classified as a surprise for sure!

Do wish when the media do these "surprise" pieces they would at least attempt to structure them closer to the team needs / limitations even if unlikely moves.

I guess I am a bit hung up on the potential add of LeMahieu to upgrade the 9th bat / RHH PH-DH.

Yes he is in decline at age 37 but really a no risk signing at league minimum with the NYY paying his contract for this season and next. Can drop him at any time. He was hitting (128 AB) .266 (.674 OPS) when the NYY released him.

Considering the Padres are using Brooks (37 AB ... .502 OPS), Wade (104 AB ... .577 OPS), Johnson (23 AB ... .751 OPS), and Iglesias (184 AB ... .562 OPS) have to think a basically free add of LeMahieu would be a significant upgrade without taking money / prospects that could be used for another upgrade.

Reports were that he was talking with several teams ... not sure why he has not committed to a team yet. Of course since the NYY are paying him ... maybe be waiting for the right team to make an offer or considering retirement. Not likely he would get another deal after 2026 when this contract ends. I guess he could be angling for a "bonus" to sign with some team (not sure how that works vs his current contract that needs to stay in place).

Maybe Preller does not see the upside of LeMahieu or has his sights on more impactful targets that he thinks he can land before the deadline.

Then again, he’s our 20th rated prospect for a reason. Maybe Nett, Baez,Haynes could fill in just as well?

They all have better minor league numbers than Bergert.🤷🏻‍♂️

No one was expecting this kind of performance from Bergert.

Might be better to take advantage of his increased value from what he has already done in his short stint in MLB?

Don’t think he’s an under 3 era big league starter for his career…….do we?

Although expect Bergert is still a trade chip ... not sure what other teams think of him as a trade target. Might not get enough back to justify dealing him.

Probably would not deal him for a 2 month rental ... considering King and Cease go FA ... Darvish is an perpetual injury risk ... Musgrove may not make it back fully. So may need Bergert along with Nett, Baez, Kolek, Vasquez just to put a staff together in 2026. All are "risks" as a ML SP at his point.

Now if a deal is for a longer control / more impact player ... then we talk.

Side: if I were gambling on dealing a controlled SP ... I might dangle Vasquez who has made 19 starts (so healthy) with a respectable ERA, at league minimum, and controlled for 5 more seasons. That should be more appealing than Bergert, et al at his point. Actually appeal to both contenders and non-contenders.

Just looking at his peripherals (especially high WHIP and xFIP) his 2025  ERA performance may not be sustainable. Sure other teams will see the same but if a great need now may make a good deal for the Padres. If the Padres could land a good controlled hitter ... I would gamble on Bergert - Kolek - Nett - Baez in the short run to back stop Pivetta - Cease - Darvish - King in 2025 ... and if they re-sign King for 2026 ... in 2025 King - Musgrove - Darvish - Pivetta.

Do think Bergert's stuff is better than his #20 ranking ... maybe his command has improved but we are really looking at a #4-5 SP in the short run ... so a 4.00 - 5.00 ERA fits that profile and do think Bergert's stuff has a chance to be better. Have more confidence in his upside than Vasquez.

Although born in California, LeMahieu may just want to stay in the East and play with Boston or Tampa Bay or Philadelphia or the Mets.  PETCO has a reputation of suppressing hitting so maybe he's looking for a place where he can play comfortably on a semi-regular basis for the next year or so before he retires.  I'd be surprised if Preller didn't make his pitch to LeMahieu but he just might not be interested sharing that RH hitting role with Iglesias and possibly playing 1b or 2b, when not DH'ing.  Iglesias doesn't have his bat but is a far superior defensive player so don't think Padres would cut him to add LeMeahieu.  My gut tells me it won't happen.

Yeh, that is a strong possibility of him wanting to stay East Coast ... he lives in Detroit suburbs in the off season ... maybe he is waiting for DET (or CUBS) to make an offer ... he does have the luxury of getting paid no matter his choice.

No idea how motivated he is to continue unless it is with a clear favorite for a World Series run. Given the time between his release and now ... his signing (with anyone) may not be a much a given as I thought.

Side: guessing the Padres would DFA Brooks to accommodate LeMahieu, not Iglesias who handles the middle INF support.

I have seen enough of LH DH/OF Trenton Brooks, why not DFA him and give Yonathan Perlaza a shot?  It can't be any worse, who knows maybe we catch lightning in a bottle and he at least gives us league average hitting, which we haven't gotten all year from the DH spot.  Anybody with me?  Go Pads!

What a job by the FO to sign the whole draft class!

Wrong thread. Apologies.

August presents a tough schedule…..quite a few games in Division against SF & LA

As I’ve said….just stay in,or just behind, the 3rd WC spot by end of August and we’ll be fine.

Love having an “easier” schedule in September.

Now go get a couple “Big Bats” ,AJ!

OK,OK…..”Medium Bats”.
