2025 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on May 9, 2025, 6:50 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on May 9, 2025, 6:30 pmConnor Joe traded to the Reds for pitcher Andrew Moore. Moore has an amazing strike out to innings pitched ratio, but man, the walks.Niebla work your magic.
223 K’s in 148 ip in his minor league career….along with 108 BB’s
Moore is non-roster to SA. So, Padres roster in now at 38 ... room for Hoeing to come off the 60 day and still add a non-roster type as needed.
Rule 5 eligible ... so adds to the interest in the roster choices after the season.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 10, 2025, 9:39 amLooking forward to Darvish being built up and effective for probably the hardest part of the Padres schedule in June. We'll need 5 SP to go through a long stretch of tough teams and Darvish is one guy who seems to rise to the occasion. Got my fingers crossed that his rehab goes well.

Quote from fenn68 on May 11, 2025, 2:26 amTime to give some recognition to the work Sheets has done so far and at a bargain price tag (and under control through 2027).
His hitting vs RHP is well beyond my expectations ... .315 BA / 157 wRC+. Plus his limited time defensively at 1B has not been bad.
VS RHP is about 75% of the starts ... so good ... but unfortunately he has never hit LHP (really sub par) so needs a platoon partner and that limits his value along with being a 1B/DH ... but keeps his cost down.
Turning into a very good signing by Preller.

Quote from fenn68 on May 11, 2025, 2:56 amThrough 38 games the Padres have looked the part of a playoff team even with significant time lost by Merrill, Cronenworth, Darvish, and Arraez. One of the best records in MLB.
Pitching is tied for 3rd in MLB with an ERA of 3.08. That is without Darvish and Cease performing below expectations. Pivetta, Vasquez, and now Kolek have been surprises above expectations. Pen has been outstanding.
The offense has been strong. Against RHP they are tied for 3rd with a 120 wRC+. Not as strong vs LHP but not "ugly" as they are tied for 13th with a 97 wRC+ (just below average).
This team does not need much (if anything) added to be a playoff team but still would like to see at least one add who can hit LHP (preferably a LF). LF is a weakness with Padres LF sitting #27 in MLB with a lowly 58 wRC+ (worse vs LHP) ... overall 203/252/297 is not good for the LF position. So a pretty low bar to target an upgrade at the trade deadline.
Two potential targets for Preller may be Hays (CINN) and Bader (MINN) ... both plus defenders, RHH hitting well this season. Both are FA after this season (mutual options) so likely not going to cost a lot in terms of prospects. As MINN and CINN fade out of playoff contention ... both teams will want some financial relief and some level of young prospects ... so both players should be on the block plus not sure much competition for their services. Either one could move to a full time LF for the Padres and become a significant upgrade for 2025 vs both RHP and LHP. Lengthen the line-up helps everyone.

Not too bad I’d say

Quote from Randy Manese on May 11, 2025, 7:12 amKolek's repertoire didn't play well in the high altitude PCL, but he's really showed well in his two starts even though one was in high altitude Denver! Had all of his pitches going last night and now has to be ranked well ahead of Bergert as the 5th/6th starter and could even move ahead of Vasquez if continues as he has been going. Leave it to Preller to find these pitching gems (also many throughout the minor league system) and for the coaching staff to develop them to their full potential. Hopes he keeps it up and really solidifies the Padres rotation in the future - looks to be under team control for 5 more years.

Quote from fenn68 on May 11, 2025, 8:01 amIf Kolek remains effective at the ML level ... when Darvish returns in a couple of weeks ... Padres have some depth with 6 ML starters and Hart / Bergert in AAA plus eventually Waldron coming off the 60 day IL (July?).
Good for the team in case of injury but also sets up some trade chips for the deadline. I could see Preller dangling Hart or Bergert to get a decent "rental" for the playoff run.
Of course if Preller really wanted to gamble ... and get a higher long term potential add ... dangle Cease who is unlikely to be re-signed after the season but is pitching well enough now to entice a contender in need of SP.
Could the Padres make their playoff run with King - Pivetta - Darvish - Vasquez - Kolek as their starting 5 if they landed a quality LF (multi-year control / low cost)?

223 K’s in 148 ip in his minor league career….along with 108 BB’s😳
Connor Joe and Yuli Gurriel were signings that did not make since.

Quote from ultratvfan on May 11, 2025, 1:46 pmHow about this trade idea: The Padres trade Dylan Cease to the Marlins for OF Kyle Stowers and minor league pitcher Robby Snelling. They can even throw in OF Jason Heyward.
