2025 Padres Season
Quote from 3fingersplit on March 10, 2025, 7:15 pmThe Padres feel they are a playoff contender...catching the Dodgers for the NL West is a long shot so I DON'T move any of our front line starting rotation until we see where we are at come the trading deadline. I still have hopes that the Padres can actually extend Dylan Cease and Michael King because with a rotation of Cease, King, Darvish, Pivetta and Hart would be a very formidable against anybody in baseball and then get Musgrove back next season...this would be a top shelf rotation and as we have seen, pitchers are dropping like flies so do not sell on the cheap.
Any trade of Cease to anyone would have to include at a minimum one MLB ready starting pitcher if not two, a corner OF and a Bat that is not just a DH only type...all have to be MLB ready for this season...not low level A or AA players of any sort.

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2025, 2:09 amMaybe the extreme view but trading Cease (or King) will never get back equal ML quality players for 2025 ... thus reducing (maybe eliminating) making the play-offs but even if they made the playoffs a much weaker SP top resulting in a rapid exit from the playoffs.
Want to win playoffs / World Series ... keep Cease - King - Pivetta - Darvish.

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2025, 2:39 amQuote from WindsorUK on March 10, 2025, 9:10 amNow with Iglesias in the picture, does AJ ramp up discussions on moving Cronenworth? Would he settle for less than he would have prior to the Iglesias signing?
Bogaerts is a 1 year stop gap back at SS( I'd move Xander back to 2B today but I don't think he'd be too impressed!) and if they're considering re-signing Arraez, Jake really becomes odd man out( especially with his inability of hitting lefty's).
Does a Suarez/Cronenworth package make sense to any team out there?
I do think the signing of Iglesias is good for the club ... but just as INF depth. He is now 35 ... defenses range is a bit down ... only a one year deal ... and given how little he signed for surprised no other team signed him first. Plus as a FA after the season .... if he produces Boras will be marketing him again at a high price and if he does not produce?
I see Iglesias playing a lot at 2B/SS/3B/1B/DH in a rotation that gets all the INF off their feet for "rest days" as the DH. Plus the INF depth is razor thin and one injury away for a gaping hole ... need the "extra" quality over the full season.
Can't see them even trying to move Cronenworth at this point ... he has a long contract that would be hard for any team to take unless Padres ate some or basically took nothing in return. Side: actually is $12MM AAV is not that bad for the level of WAR he produces ... should be better returning to 2B. Just "cover" him vs some LHP. Plus virtually nothing in the system to replace him until DeVries arrives in the INF or if Iglesias just has age catch-up to him.
Keep Cronenworth until DeVries arrives ... shortens the contract commitment and makes his AAV seem better with inflation ... and if then want to deal him ... more likely get teams that would be interested. So, here for 2025-26 ... toss up on the lockout season of 2027 then maybe out before 2028.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 11, 2025, 1:00 pmJust a thought on this one...AJ Preller likes young controllable pitching. I posted this on MLB TradeRumors and I remember when Liberatore was in the draft and quite a few people thought that the Padres would have taken him but took Ryan Weathers instead at pick number 7 and could have had Liberatore at 16, Logan Gilbert at 14, Grayson Rodriquez at 11
What would it take to get Liberatore in a trade?
Left Handed Pitcher – 6’4″ – 215 lbs.
Free agent in 2030 and is still pre arbitration eligible with full on Arbitration due starting in 2027.
Gives up a one HR every 9-10 innings pitched
Has about a 3 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio
Whip of 1.267
ERA of 4.40
86 innings pitchedMichael McGreevy – Right Handed Pitcher – 6’4″ – 220 lbs. has about the same stats but is not a free agent until 2031 and arbitration eligible in 2028
Very small sample size for stats
Gives up a HR every 20 innings
Strike outs 18 / Walks 2 in 23 innings pitched
Whip of .783
ERA of 1.96
23 innings pitchedProjections would give the edge to McGreevy so would that make Liberatore a trade possibility?

Liberatore WAS available to the Padres in the 2018 draft ... and they took Ryan Weathers instead.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 11, 2025, 4:46 pmYup
They took Ryan Weathers at 7 and the Rays took Liberatore at 16...the Padres also passed on Logan Gilbert (Mariners) at 14, he has turned out to be a stud- 6'6" - 215 lbs. and since 2022 he has thrown 185, 190 and 208 innings pitched and the stats that jump off the page is 2024...208 innings pitched, 33 games started, 9-12 Record, ERA of 3.23, 220 Strike Outs and only 37 Base on Balls...Seattle got a good one and Grayson Rodriquez (Orioles) at 11- 6'5"-230 lbs. 20 games started, 13-4 Record, ERA of 3.86 116 Innings Pitched, 130 Strike Outs, 36 Base on Balls and a 1.291 whip.
Dylan Cease -6'2"- 200 lbs.- 33 Games Started including a No Hitter, 14-11 record, ERA of 3.47, 189 Innings Pitched, 224 Strike Outs, 65 Base on Balls and a whip of 1.067 and Michael King- 6'3"-210 lbs.- Games Started 30, 13-9 record, ERA of 2.93, 174 Innings Pitched, 201 Strike Outs, 63 Base on Balls with a whip of 1.192
Yu Darvish-#3, Nick Pivetta-#4, with Kyle Hart, Randy Vasquez (RHP), Matt Waldron (RHP) and Steven Kolek battling for the #5 spot in the starting rotation... personally I would love to see either Hart (LHP) or Kolek (RHP) grab the last spot with Hart getting the first shot being a LHP. Kolek is going to be a good one, Waldron and Vasquez have already shown they can fill the #5 spot...it's a quality problem to have because you NEVER have enough Starting Pitching and the Yankees come to mind...they spent the whole off season trying to trade Marcus Stroman and it never happened and now with Luis Gill out for a few months (Oblique Strain) and Garritt Cole out for the season (Tommy John Surgery) they are lucky to just put Stroman back in the spotlight / starting rotation.
That is why I keep saying DO NOT trade your front line starters until you absolutely have to...extend them if at all possible and if there is a way to extend both Cease and King then this Padres starting rotation will be nails for years to come especially after getting Joe Musgrove back.

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2025, 7:44 pmSTL would love to deal Arenado (mainly his contract) and throw in Liberatore for some quality prospects. Been trying to do that all winter and no takers.
Primarily teams really don't want Arenado's 3 year / $74MM remaining contract for a player on his decline at age 35. Last two seasons he was an "average" hitter (106, 102 wRC+) with plus defense at 3B (not sure would get that at another position). Liberatore is penciled in as a LHRP in STL ... who has a marginal SP rotation, so maybe not a strong projection of Liberatore as a starter (was not that great for a couple of seasons in AAA).
If Padres add Arenado ... they vault up the CBT penalty table and would be paying a lot more in penalties (essentially making Arenado more expensive).
Cards might eat a bit of the first year salary ... they likely would not take on a big contract back or a player with short control (e.g. Suarez) ... they want to reduce payroll. What prospects would the Cards demand? Padres have little that would help the Cards for years ... so would have to be some volume of good prospects to dip into Salas or DeVries.
Does not seem a fit.

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2025, 7:48 pmAgree not to trade any of the main SP ... really hoping to see what Hart really has ... Kolek may surprise. Not so up on Waldron-Vasquez-Brito but as a #5 in an emergency probably OK.
I guess if one of Waldron-Vasquez-Brito (maybe two) can get a legit upgrade to the bench for 2025 ... would consider making a deal.

Because it’s sure looking like against left handers one should play first and one should DH
