The key is if the contract makes sense. A lot of question whether he will be available to start the season ... major Achilles injury last June takes a long rehab. Throw in prior to his hot start with the Mets last year his time with the Angels was as a below average pitcher.
I probably would not guarantee any money / roster slot and try to land him on a one year minor league / major league split contract with incentives if he is put on the 26 man and an opt out in June.
Sounding as though he may land a ML deal with the CWS ... likely spending some dollars to gamble on a trade chip at the trade deadline.

Potentially half the infield, too, with Edwards and maybe Pauley on the right side of the diamond.
People, not saying you, used to get mad at this. "We trade them then they get good"
I love it. Shows quality of SDP scouting and value of prospects which could ehance value of other MiL players from the system in trades.
Edwards had a good season for a “slap *ick prospect” but none of them would I say are “good” yet at this level.
May be soon…..but not yet.

Quote from brent wolff on January 11, 2026, 12:40 amFound an article that ties 7 players to the Pads once the international signing period opens on 1/15/26. Some we have already discussed: Cuban SS Joniel Hernandez and Mexican LHP Diego Serna.
New names listed in the article: Aruban OF Timothy Mogen; Cuban RHP Jordan Perez; Hungarian C Marko Morua (will be the first Hungarian to ever sign with a MLB team); Dominican Republic CF Luis Alfredo Rodriguez; and Venezuelan INF Cristhian Herrero. The approximate $3.2 million spent lives around $2.75 million left to spend. is there another big name out there we don't know we are connected with? Go Pads!

Quote from fenn68 on January 11, 2026, 5:28 amLooks like the Cubs are making moves to really contend ... trade for SP Cabrera and now
the Cubs attempted to steal a little bit of the spotlight by agreeing to a five-year, $175MM contract with free agent Alex Bregman. In doing so, the Cubs land MLBTR’s fifth-ranked free agent to take over at the hot corner.
Slight more than projected deal.

Quote from fenn68 on January 11, 2026, 6:00 amSort of out of sight out of mind ... but don't forget Jhony Brito as a SP option ... maybe not for early in the season but as a call-up (thinking here #5 potential). AAA insurance now ... potential 2027 depth.
He had the internal brace surgery last April and that is usually a 9 month recovery which would have him ready for ST. Needs to start in the minors to get his game back ... but he was a good minor leaguer for the NYY before the trade to the Padres.
In the ML he has a 4.23 ERA in 134 innings ... and that is near "average" and certainly good enough for bottom of the rotation SP. Only 27, league minimum, long control. Not a big strikeout guy but a good command that generates weak contact. Will be interesting in ST where he stands on recovery but will not expect a lot of innings in his return year.

Quote from fenn68 on January 11, 2026, 6:36 amST (pitchers and catchers) report in about a month so we should expect an acceleration of FA signings across the league ... soon ... with FA wanting a home and the "demands" should be dropping.
With Sears' arbitration coming in about $1MM less than projected ... the Padres cash projection is about $220MM ... a $9MM INCREASE over 2025. Side note is that puts the Padres at #9 in projected payroll and about $30MM more than #10 (Boston).
Given that payroll position and belief that the Padres still need multiple upgrades (RHH, depth SP at a minimum) ... how much can we realistically believe is available to increase payroll further to sign FA? (trying to not just be wishful here). I doubt the wiggle room is all that much and will be used only for someone Preller has some confidence in ... not just a fill for a need ... otherwise go with who are at hand. Don't see any low cost FA that are compelling with health / upside.
Also, if some wiggle room but multiple holes ... do you split the money over a couple of fringe upgrades (relying on the core to carry the team) or go bigger on one upgrade (RHH or SP) and then rely on the current fringe players to fill in the holes left open?
All that makes me think a trade is most likely ... maybe a trade first then fill with FA.
