2024 Winter Meetings Dec 9-12
Quote from ultratvfan on December 5, 2024, 4:40 pmThe Winter meetings are just around the corner beginning on Monday, Dec 9. A year ago the only big move AJP made was Trade Soto and Grisham to New York Yankees for King, Higashioka, Randy Vásquez, RHP Jhony Brito and RHP Drew Thorpe. Higgy and Thorpe are gone. King will be here for the 2025 season. I am not sure where the Padres stand with Brito and Vasquez.
What big moves will the AJP make this time. The Padres needs are catcher, starting pitcher, relief pitcher, left field and shortstop:
-- It's likely that Roki Sasaki will not be available for signing until January. In the meantime, who does Padres get. Burnes will be too expensive. Fried probably will be too.
-- Higgy is gone and that opens a spot for catcher via trade, FA, rule V draft or from the minors.
-- Kim will likely not be back. Either Bogaerts moves to SS or AJP acquires one from a trade or FA or even rule V draft. Anyone think that AJP will surprise us and sign Adamas. What are the other options?
-- The Padres also need at least one more SP with Musgrove out and a RP with a possibility of Tanner Scott not returning. Although, I hope he re-signs. I don't know what the status of Martin Perez, who was solid when joined the Padres and was even more solid AT Petco Park.
-- I would like to see AJP keep David Peralta and Donavan Solano and re-sign Profar.Padres 2024 Free Agents

Quote from fenn68 on December 5, 2024, 8:40 pmHave to consider the move Preller makes is trading a current Padre for salary space to sign a couple of mid-range FA to balance the roster. I have my doubts that the Padres who already be over the CBT after the arbitration decisions will be adding much (if anything) to the total payroll.
I don’t have RP or even SP as the highest priority … more concerned about catcher, LF, and a 1B/DH. Pen is fine as is and SP is a gamble (if Sasaki does not sign) but a Cease-King-Darvish top 3 is a good baseline.
To get salary space (not ML talent) have to consider moving players who other teams may actually want and willing to take their salary. For me that pushes Suarez to the top of the list … Arraez if they can find a buyer … and at a lower level Peralta. Since I think they can “cover” the pen internally … that would get them about $20MM to deploy on 3-4 position players and drop them under the CBT threshold with a little cushion for mid-season adjustments.
That is probably the most pessimistic scenario BUT not unrealistic and a starting point given the unknown of payroll limits.

Couple of unknowns:
- Are the Padres worried about "cash" in 2025 or crossing the CBT and incurring penalties ... maybe both. Backloading can save 2025 cash but does not help the CBT.
- Do the Padres actually want to sign any of these players to longer term deals that would would be required for backloading?
- Do the Padres want to sign anyone to a multi-year deal (especially the average types) when they may want to keep future payroll space to extend Merrill and one or more of King, Cease, Arraez after 2025?
- Do the players want a backloaded deal ... have to be thinking about the CBA ending after 2026 then most expect a strike / lockout to begin 2027 ... not getting paid for ????? at the higher salary.
Does not really impact the long term meg deals much but those 3 year type deals have an added risk to the player if backloaded.
I would not be surprised if Preller waits it out ... see who is left around and steps in with one year deals at a "bargain" price" ... to that end could see the re-signing of Solano and Peralta. Diaz is a harder call given that the catchers going off the board are in the $6-8MM range but if he is left hanging might land lower.
Profar is the one that is going to be a tough call ... especially if another team is interested and willing to pay up. Still thinking the Padres will have to deal Suarez and/or Arraez to fit in Profar and the other adds while keeping within budget. Since Arraez will be a FA after the season (and will carry a $14-15MM ARB salary) and Suarez will opt out after the season ... might as well as move them now with some value and use their money to rebalance the roster.
