2024 Padres Season

PreviousPage 46 of 48Next

Not entirely clear on the playoff roster limits … but it does drop back from the current 28 to 26. Now the split is 14 position players and 14 pitchers but in the normal season everyone seems to go with 13 and 13. So under any circumstances two on the current roster will be deactivated.

However on the Padres website the speculation was 14 position players and 12 pitchers for the first series. Can’t see a definitive statement but what I have seen suggests the 13 pitcher limit is a MAX not an actual required number.

So IF they add Kim they would only need to deactivate one position player. Can’t see that being Wade who can play all over the field and PR (plus been a part of the team all season). On one hand Ahmed seem logical but can’t option him … if released not available for any of the playoffs if a legit defensive SS is needed (and Kim is not available for SS) … so, in my mind by default Lockridge gets the bump.

Following that through … two pitchers have to be deactivated for the first round of the playoffs … who?

We may be in a position where we need the Rockies to win 2 of 3 from the dodgers this weekend.

Even if we pull off the sweep we would have to also sweep the D Backs or need help from the Rox.

At least they are playing in Coors where anything can happen.

If the Padres sweep the LAD they have the tie-breaker as I understand … if so the Padres only need to match what the LAD do in COLO.

Correct.....and I'm assuming the Rockies don't sweep them so I'm going with the dodgers winning 2 of 3 in Col.

Which means we need to sweep LA and then win 2 of 3 in Az.

IF somehow the Rox can win more than 1.....that would be great!

I forgot that the roster doesn't have to be balanced. In that case I think you're right. If Kim gets activated before the end of the regular season and you want to keep Ahmed around as insurance you option Lockridge. Once the playoffs start you can deactivate Ahmed without any issue. You could swap Lockridge and Ahmed at that point. I don't see any reason for Kim and Ahmed to be on the roster. I think Jacob and one of either Matsui or Peralta would be easy calls for the arms to drop. They're hardly pitching and you'll have starters available to replace them. Peralta was warming up for Ohtani last night. That could be an indication that Matsui would be the one left out.

If they want an extra arm Wade vs Lockridge could be an interesting choice. I think Lockridge is the better runner and they've used him to replace Profar late on defense. Wade has been there all year and is clearly a great teammate, but I don't know that he plays much of a role if Kim is healthy.

Another amazing fact!

Offseason shocker. Preller trades Bogaerts back to BOS and signs Adames for SS!

So our Division hopes now depend on us winning the next four games and the Rockies winning 2 of 3 from the dodgers this weekend.

So you're saying it's possible?😂
