2024 Padres Season

Padres will have an interesting decision on Sunday SEP 1 (in TB) when they can add one pitcher and one position player to the active roster.

Does not appear that Tatis, Kim, or Darvish are ready to be activated … but all are “close” and are expected to be activated soon after.

If not those three … who do they call up (then probably send back down as the others are activated). The pitcher should be “easy” with a few RP (Bachar, Jacob, Gillespie) in play until Darvish is added.

Position player is more of a question … Azocar, Rosario, Ornelas,  Sullivan are on the 40 man … returned when Kim arrives then someone else has to go down for Tatis (McCoy or Wade or Johnson?)

Then there is the non-roster Diaz strategy.

I didn't like the 40 man active roster back them, but, I am not sold on the 28 man roster either, maybe 30-32 should be the way to go. At least for my taste.

There have already been a few interesting names placed on waivers. With today being the last day to put a player on waivers while maintaining postseason eligibility we could see a few more. I don't know if anyone would make it to us. They would have to get by the Mets, Braves, Astros, Royals, Twins, and anyone else who might consider a claim. It could be something to watch though.

With Kim, Tatis, Darvish, and Peralta all coming off the IL soon … two of which will displace current 26 man roster players … not sure anyone on the waiver wire would be a fit.

Given the cohesive team this year (along with winning) … risk throwing a wrench into that with an “outsider” bumping a team player who has been a contributor to the team’s success … might just backfire. Plus given the returnees, the 28 man is pretty complete with talent … not major holes.

With a hot run in STL, Arraez has moved to #1 in the NL batting race. Has a legit shot at three straight batting titles with three different teams.

Side: Merrill is sitting #8 and Profar is sitting #10 … not too bad.

I would've thought that he was the perfect guy to play at Petco, but his .249 there is keeping his BA lower than previous years, he was hitting .292 at the Marlins Park before the trade and .376 last year, expectations have changed, maybe he is not use to having 35,000+ fans waiting for a hit each night, the offseason might help and he will be better next year at home.

Of the names I've seen placed on waivers today the one that stands out is Robbie Grossman. He's still hitting lefties very well. He could replace Bryce Johnson as Peralta's platoon partner until Tatis is back. They could both be solid bench bats and maybe let Profar get a few days off down the stretch after Tatis returns. Listening to Profar talk after the game last night he sounds gassed.

Did hear a comment that a good chance both Kim and Tatis will be back next week ... necessitating at least one move off the current 26 man and since Tatis is on the 60 day ... one move off the 40 man. Claiming Grossman (or anyone) off waivers would force another player off the 26 man and the 40 man.

Not dropping either Solano or Peralta or Campusano ... so one of Wade, McCoy, or Johnson needs to be optioned (or DFA). I used to think it was a lock to be McCoy but beginning to think Wade is on thin ice with a poor second half. Peralta becomes the sub for Profar / Tatis and Johnson remains around for defense in CF and Peralta. McCoy's glove at SS may beat out Wade (neither can hit).

Same scenario with Darvish and Peralta room for one (Peralta probably on Sept 1) and then Darvish would force someone to be optioned (Vasquez? ... with all the off days in SEPT need RP more than starters.) So hard to justify a pick up of a pitcher.

E. Diaz (non-roster) looks to be only added in an injury emergency although a very outside chance, given his recent struggles offensively / defensively they option Campusano ... add Diaz ... drop someone from the 40 man. Not likely though since that would be a disruption to the pitching staff / catcher dynamic that would not want to do this late in a playoff run.

When the roster expands, Tatis returns and Johnson goes down. But, somebody will be DFA'd or released to make room for Tatis on the 4-man roster.

When Kim returns either McCoy or Wade goes down. I would prefer to keep McCoy. He is the better SS.

When Darvish returns Vasquez goes down.

I think Diaz will be activated and either Campy, Higgy, or Brett Sullivan will be released to make room on the 40-man. I think it will be Sullivan and the Padres go with 3 catchers.

Definitely don't want to lose Higashioka! Dude has produced way beyond anyone's expectations.

Sullivan would seem the odd man out.

Since Sullivan is NOT on the 26 man … adding Diaz would have to bump someone else off the 26 man first … Sullivan could be the guy off the 40 man.

Longer run view Diaz would be a FA after the season … Higashioka is a FA after the season … no guarantee that either will re-sign … so Sullivan is DFA and becomes a minor league FA he may walk leaving only Campusano in play for 2025. Sullivan is not great but he is insurance until a replacement is locked down.

Also, who gets cut from the rest of the 26 man if they keep three catchers while adding back both Tatis and Kim.
