Both are veterans who should have no issue with playing “part-time”. Together they easily cover DH/1B/2B/LF/RF … maybe 3B if they gamble a bit with Solano. That allows Pauley, Rosario, Batten get all their needed AB in AAA for call-up as needed and set up their runs for 2025. Wade (veteran) and Azocar cover the remaining bench pieces.
It is a long season and the “starting 9” will not play all the remaining games … so having a quality veteran hitter in the mix is likely more valuable than an unproven prospect wasting away on the bench.
So, add both?

Listing to Derek Togerson (NBC 7) and he did some research on Shildt’s track record as a ML manager. If form holds … Padres’ fans should be encouraged.
Apparently in every season as a manager … his teams finished the season “hot” … strong winning records in the Aug-Sep timeframes.
Wonder if how he handles the player usage in the first part of seasons leads to the better play in last part of the seasons. Are they more rested? Are they more comfortable in how they are being used? Does he make good adjustments to the roster mid-season?
That track record should give Shildt some slack on his early season moves, I guess.

Probably time to give some love to Profar who had very few supporters going into the season. Signs for only $1MM (plus incentives) but ends up starting LF and out of the eight “qualified” Padres, Profar is #1 in OPS (.857), OBP (.400), and RBI (18). Will this last … probably not … but should appreciate his work while we can.
On the other hand, beyond Bogaerts who is just running at the bottom of the eight qualified, have to be frustrated with Machado (at $31MM AAV for another decade) … he is sitting 7th in OPS (731) and sixth in RBI (12). He had an “off season” in 2023 and so far an “off season” in 2024 … injury maybe but at age 31 and with that contract … beginning to be concerned. Need the big money “stars” to produce …
That also applies to Musgrove (again is it injury or ?). Seven starts (35 innings) …6.94 ERA / 1.66 WHIP … .320 BAA … 9 HR allowed. That is just bad. Command is way off and seems to be hanging a lot of breaking balls.
Never liked big money long term contracts … results are confirming my view.

Luis Patino had Tommy John surgery yesterday ... clearly eliminates 2024 and likely 2025 (at least from any plus productivity). He is on the 40 man (IL) ... so Padres have some options ahead:
- move him (when needed) to the 60 day IL but they will still have to pay him ML minimum for 2024 (even if they release him at this date I think)
- next winter ... non-tender him ... he would have 3 years of ML service and eligible for arbitration for a season he will not be of value and with no minor league options would be hard to keep on the 26 man whenever he is healthy ... given other needs for money ... non-tender makes the most sense while opening a roster slot.
- Since Preller seems to like his upside still ... try to resign him to a minor league contract.
Roster is sitting at 39 ... so the first non-roster add requires no move and now the second can be handled with Patino to the 60 day IL.

Padres close to acquiring Arraez….pending physicals.
Guesses to who/how many we have to give up?
Please no Salas,DeVries,Snelling or Mazur

Have not seen the CBT calculation for the partial year of Arraez in and the partial year of Go out … but will still be under the CBT by at least $5MM (need some room for Profar’s $1.5MM of incentives that look like they will be earned).
Guessing he becomes the full time DH and Manny is ready for full time 3B. Pauley now has to be to guy optioned.
Arraez is under control in 2025 via Arbitration and currently at $10.6MM … so expect a a decent increase. Next winter might be some interesting speculation how they stay under the CBT if they try to resign Kim and/or Profar.

I assume he will DH and keeping our top 5 prospects and all of our young Starters…..I can live with it.

Guys usually don't hit as well here as everywhere else.
So we're trading for someone who's a Punch and Judy type, no D, no speed?
I can't imagine he's worth 4 guys???
