2024 Padres Season
Quote from sportwarrior on April 17, 2024, 1:52 pmXander's slump to start the season has been absolutely miserable. I really like the guy and obviously want him to get right, but WOW is it costing us. I think we should get Kim back up to the top of the lineup and bounce Xander down to the 6 spot for a breather. His strike out in the 8th absolutely killed us.
Oh, and can we please banish Higashioka to, like, an isolated light house somewhere? He brings absolutely NOTHING to the table. Why in the world we acquired him is absolutely beyond me. No one can tell me someone like Sullivan would be any worse defensively or offensively than Higgy has been. What a waste of a roster spot.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 17, 2024, 3:32 pmNever understood the Higashioka thing( Soto trade does not get held up for him!)
And as I've said, dude needs to start looking like an MLB player at the dish if he wants to hang around.
Sullivan brings the same game.

It ended up “cash considerations” which suggests that multiple teams claimed him and Cleveland offered the most money to jump whichever team had the highest claim position off waivers.

Quote from fenn68 on April 18, 2024, 11:45 amToo early for conclusions but … as starters:
1. Cease (28, $8MM AAV) … 4 starts (22.1 innings) … 1.99 ERA
2. King (28, $3.1MM AAV) … 4 starts (23.2 innings) … 2.66 ERA
3. Waldron (28, minimum AAV) … 3 starts (14.1 innings) … 3.14 ERA
4. Darvish (37, $18MM AAV) … 5 starts (23.2 innings) … 4.18 ERA
5. Musgrove (31, $20MM AAV) … 5 starts (24.1 innings) … 6.29 ERA
Early credit to Preller for the adds of Cease and King … otherwise Padres in a real bind with Darvish and Musgrove being the main arms.
Have some confidence that Cease and King will be solid for the season … and Musgrove will at some point regain his effectiveness. Not as confident in the 37 year old Darvish (he was not great in 2023) and is entering an era when his age is leading to injuries? Waldron is just a wild card but if he delivers innings and an ERA near 4.00 that is very good for a #5 SP.
————-
Additional kudos to Preller for three bullpen adds: Matsui (10 innings … 0.90 ERA); Peralta (10 innings … 0,90 ERA); and De Los Santos (8.1 innings … 1.08 ERA).

The pitching over that past two weeks has been some of the best in MLB … good sign. A lot of changes with very limited money … hard to pull off the adds successfully but looks like it is working.

Quote from sportwarrior on April 18, 2024, 1:51 pmI haven't seen any discussion regarding the rumored settlement between the Padres and Diamond Sports. There was word the last few days that the team had settled for as much as $78m following the collapse of Bally Sports San Diego. However, it appears as if the settlement is much lower, totaling out at around $17m. Ultimately, this probably doesn't matter much. The loss of ~$60m regular annual revenue is what matters, and $78m (let alone $17m) just isn't enough to make up for that.

Not much … but it is bankruptcy and the liquidation process was never going to yield big money … sort of lucky to get anything.
$17MM is > than zero … so good I guess given the situation.

From what I read the total settlement amount ~65m with a 17m "down payment" and a balloon payment for the balance TBD pending the resolution of the bankruptcy proceedings.

MLBTR posted a follow-up on this today. The initial payment was worth $10.5m, but the balloon payment will only be worth $6.5m. At least, according to their sources, anyway.

The last update was a current payment of $10.5MM and a later payment of $6.5MM … total $17MM.
No idea why the inaccuracy of the initial report.

Quote from lafnboy13 on April 18, 2024, 3:59 pmIf the total is 17m then we got royally screwed. That's barely half of Machado for a year 😀
