I guess Profar did not not want to play here as bady as I thought.

Remaining Padres free agents:

C Elías Díaz (34)
SS Ha-Seong Kim (29)
SS Nick Ahmed (35)
OF David Peralta (37)
RHP Carl "C.J." Edwards Jr. (33)
OF Bryce Johnson(29)

I don't think any team is quick to sign Kim because of his injury. AJP needs to try an re-sign him for inexpensive.  Right now he is not woth Boras money due to that injury.

Doubt any team (including the Padres) will sign him until he has a few workouts and shows he can play ... a SS with no arm is not worth much. If he shows he can play ... his price is too high for the Padres.

Good SS are hard to come by ... so even if convinces a team he will be ready mid-season ... think he will get his money. Not signing anywhere "cheap".

Oddly OK with a Machado-Bogaerts-Cronenworth-Arraez INF ... at least enough to spend money at other needs like LF, DH, C ... IF there is any money to spend.

From MLBTR, DET is looking for a late inning RP with closing experience. I wonder if we could swing a Suarez for Torkelson trade? Although he is RHH, and we are light on LHH, he is still close to league minimum and would allow for a trade of Arraez. Maybe a change of scenery would do him well, and SD could use the $13M+ towards other needs.

This has the "Mr. P. seal of approval"!

Preller can get a lot more for Suarez than Torkelson who Detroit is close to optioning to the minors after his miserable 2024. More reputation as a top draft pick than production as a MLer.

Last season Torkelson has a lowly 0.1 WAR (that was #31 for 1B with >300 PA) ... his wRC+ was a under average 92 (#36 among 1B). Not a defense plus. However, as a platoon DH vs LHP he does have appeal since he had a 122 wRC+ vs LHP.

So would take Torkelson but more for the likes of Peralta ... or another fringe RP.

Maybe get him as a "throw-in" as part of a bigger (more compelling return) for Suarez.

White Sox Trade Ron Marinaccio To Padres

Padres BUY RHRP Ron Marinaccio from the CWS. 29 years old, spent part of 3 seasons with the NYY and has 4 years control (still at league minimum). Can be optioned in 2025.

Actually not bad ML stats ... career 115 innings with a 3.22 ERA. So, probably a decent swing man between AAA / ML in 2025. No idea ... given his stats ... why some other team was not in on him.

Adding a BP arm before we trade a BP arm?

Looking a little deeper in Marinaccio ... in his rookie year with the NYY (2021) he was very good. 44 innings with 56K ... ERA 2.05 / WHIP 1.05. Then beset by some injuries that cost him some time and apparently lost a bit on his FB (still in the 93-94 MPH range). Always had a issue with control.

So, at league minimum (if makes the ML) and an option year on a roster that had only 34 players ... adding him is a good gamble the Niebla (and the organization) can get him back (or at least near) to his 2021 performance.

Not expecting an "end of game" type but potentially effective set-up / middle inning support. Remember that Estrada was picked up on waivers last season and turned into solid ML RP after some time in AAA.

These are the no risk gambles that Preller needs to take to fill out the roster.
