Quote from fenn68 on January 23, 2025, 2:18 pmIt will be interesting to see what he signed for.
At one level, I thought this roster was a playoff contender as is and Profar would make it better but that still leaves me with the same thought that this roster is a playoff contender (with "minor" tinkering).
Since the Padres have not signed Profar or any other FA (not considering Wade who signed for $200K above minimum) ... beginning to worry that there is no chance they move the payroll up from the cash $208MM and more likely need to make trades to reduce payroll ... no matter the return.
We will see in a couple of months.

Quote from fenn68 on January 23, 2025, 2:33 pm3 years / $42MM ($12-15-15MM) ... good for a good guy in Profar and I can see where that is way out of the Padres range.
Been a bad couple of weeks.

Quote from 3fingersplit on January 23, 2025, 2:47 pmI thought Profar did a good job here but the Braves are going to regret that contract...last year was an outlier.
3 years - 12 million, 15 million, 15 million is too much.
We get to see him opening day at Petco and it will be interesting to see what kind of reception he gets from the fans.

I been reading all the rationalizations and where the light could possibly come. The truth is we have 3 starters, 2/3 of a lineup and a strong bullpen. This is where we were 2 years ago without the the bullpen. We missed the playoffs that year due to some really crappy close game numbers. IMHO, we are only slightly better than that team. If we trade anyone without the like productivity in return then we will be worse than that team which will make for a depressing year,

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 23, 2025, 2:56 pmAJ wasn’t giving Profar $42 mil.
Great for him…from $1 mil to $42 mil in one season.

I'm happy for Profar. He is getting long in the tooth, in baseball, and this should set him up for life nicely.

I agree, this will be bad for ATL. There is a reason that COL cut him in 2023 with a $7M salary. He really only performs in SD. I am surprised that other GMs dont realize this. I can see late this season or next offseason and ATL paying down his contract to send him back to SD.
