Has anyone heard anything about SD actually trying to make trades?
I did see a report that LA was...but nothing on SD.
Again...not a great sign.

So again...if SD and LA are both trying to get more $...is that really what it's come down too?
Clearly money appears to be a major factor for Sasaki and his agent ... and this competition between SD and LAD will get him more I guess.
One subtlety could be strategy that gets Sasaki more from the team he wants to sign with but still not just taking the current largest offer. Maybe he has decided on SD for $6MM but by putting this bidding war in place he gets SD up to $7MM and still would take that over LAD going up to $8MM. Of course he could have decided on LAD but they lag $1MM behind SD ... so put this process in play ... LAD move up their bid (even if still less than the SD new bid) and still signs with LAD but for more money than their current bid.
So maybe not the most money ... just more than is on the table currently for his preferred team.

Seems like a lot of un necessary playing one team against the other.
I'm sure if Roki told either team I will sign with you but you need to add the allowable 60% to your current amount either team would jump at it.
No need to make "both" teams raise their amount only then to just choose one.

Or he is still having trouble deciding between SD and LA ... he is only 23 making a 6 year decision that sets up his FA future while wanting to be "happy" in those 6 years ... that is a big decision. Both teams likely have presented some pretty compelling arguments for their side.
So, maybe using the degree of effort by the teams to get more to sign him is an indicator of how he views their commitment to him (and his future). Basically using the money as a tool rather than an end?

I think he's going to ask for the maximum amount. I just don't think he's going to try to get both teams to up their bids before he makes his decision. I just think both teams are trying to line the necessary moves up if he ultimately chooses them. Once he makes a choice whichever team he chooses will trade for the extra money. I don't see both teams adding funds.

Beyond the simple sign / don't sign Sasaki ... Preller has to be juggling alternative scenarios with or without Sasaki and they may be very different. I am pretty locked in that the Padres will start the season below the CBT (currently $2MM over) and some amount below the cash $208MM. Hence, for now, no FA signings even with some glaring needs in LF, C, 1B/DH.
If Sasaki signs ... even though would love 4 elite SP ... think Cease at about $14MM is dealt since he would fit the reduced payroll need and should yield the best return of the Padre trade options. Note that coupling his $14MM with dealing Suarez ($10MM) might make the payroll bogey while allowing some adds (think Profar) along with whomever the get in return boosting the 26 man roster. Still 3 deep in quality SP should get them a legit playoff run.
If Sasaki does not sign ... a problem and can't really justify dealing Cease and going down to only two quality SP ... but still need to lower payroll. So then shift to dealing Arraez or Cronenworth (along with Suarez) ... harder to do and will get a much lesser return.
Just think some unknown payroll bogey is the controlling factor for this winter ... so Preller has to know the Sasaki result before he can makes the moves that best fits keeping a competitive team (and payroll).
Given other teams "know" Preller's dilemma ... has to be hard for him to deal unless it is Cease who just will have multiple teams bidding for him ... not so much the others.

Padres (per D. Lin) have signed C Martin Maldanado to a minor league contract with invite to ST. So some insurance with a no hit plus defense defense profile . A bit old (38) but considering the alternatives ... OK.

The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes could be over at any moment. Sponichi, a major Japanese newspaper outlet, reported Sasaki is expected to sign by the end of today.
