Any relation to LHP Martin Perez that pitched for us last year?
Same dude. On one hand he pitched well for the Padres and that made him an interesting option but on the other hand given the going rate for SP even bottom of the rotation types has been running $10MM plus and with all the teams that want SP ... his ability to get only $5MM and from the CWS may be telling on how he is viewed across MLB.
So, maybe really not a los opportunity with a tight budget ... that $5MM may yield a more productive option or avoid dropping someone off the current roster.

Quote from fenn68 on January 8, 2025, 3:56 pmRumor (Jon Heyman) is that the NYY are preparing an official offer for Arraez. Speculated it will be Stroman (plus some cash to offset his $18MM contract) and their #5 prospect RHSP Will Warren (25, AAA/MLB). Keep in mind this may be their offer but any deal likely will look different once Preller negotiates tweeks. Key is that the NYY are legitimately "interested" setting the table for a real deal.
If the deal is as speculated ... a lot depends on the money included with Stroman. If however Preller swings this like the Arraez trade with MIA ... almost all Stroman's salary may be covered by the NYY which would make this a plus trade for the Padres. The money saved from Arraez' salary could be used to sign Profar (and maybe even Diaz) with the Padres ending up with a "free" Stroman as the #4-5 SP. Side: Stroman has a 2026 vesting option for $18MM ... pricey but some insurance when Cease and King hit FA.
Stroman is 32 and was very good before 2024 and for the first 4 months of 2024 ... then collapsed in Aug/Sep. Major upgrade from Waldron / Vasquez. Sign Sasaki and a starting 5 of King - Cease - Sasaki - Darvish - Stroman might be pretty effective in getting them to the playoffs.
Warren is a very good prospect (rough 2024) but good in AAA in 2023.
I guess an alternative scenario after getting Stroman (and signing Sasaki) is trading Cease ($14MM) to make the bogey payroll (or at least get part way there) ... Cease is the one trade chip that may yield the best bounty of talent in return ... fills for the needs in the field (?) LF, 1B, C.
Depending on what Preller has up his sleeve with following moves ... this could be an good set-up deal.

Same person. I mistakenly wote RHP instead of LHP.

Quote from fenn68 on January 9, 2025, 10:34 amKing and the Padres have not reached an agreement and will exchange figures for ARB later this afternoon. Both sides still can negotiate until the hearings in early FEB. (per Acre).
A bit surprised on this one given how much both sides seemed to be on the same page. However, guessing King's side is looking at his outstanding 2024 while the Padres may be looking more at how ARB works and that considers not only 2024 but previous years ... and King was mainly a RP which will normally keep an arbitrator's more aligned with a lower number than a one year view (likely the player's) would suggest.
We will see soon what both sides submit. Probably will still settle before the ARB hearing.

Cease at $13.75MM ... so King is the only outlier ... for now.

Quote from ultratvfan on January 9, 2025, 12:41 pmPadres settle with Arraez ($14M) and Cease ($13.75M), per source
Three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and the Padres settled on a $14 million deal for the 2025 season to avoid arbitration, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal.
Any clubs and players who did not come to an agreement after the 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT arbitration deadline must then exchange salary figures and schedule a hearing.
Sources also told Feinsand that San Diego agreed to a $13.75 million deal with right-hander Dylan Cease, a $4.8 million deal with righty reliever Jason Adam and a $1 million deal with catcher Luis Campusano. Right-hander Michael King and the Padres did not reach an agreement before Thursday's deadline, though, and will exchange figures.
Lefty reliever Adrian Morejon is also arbitration-eligible.

Nope ... they still can be traded at any time. Maybe "easier" now that the buying teams as a fixed price on the player's salary and the buying team does not have to deal with any player negotiation / arbitration.
