2024-25 Offseason Talk
Quote from fenn68 on January 7, 2025, 3:31 amThe earlier report had the NYY "interested" in Arraez or Lux ... LAD just traded Lux to the Reds.
I guess that makes Arraez more of a trade possibility to the NYY ... but would also think SEA (apparently looking for a 1B and/or someone with contract skills) or potentially the NYM if they do not sign Alonso or Bergman.
IF the Padres need to drop some projected payroll ... Arraez' estimated $14.6 MM might be the better option given the amount, he being a FA after 2025, and probably easier to cover (in part) with a lower cost option ... he should have a market and an easy trade if Preller does not demand too large a return.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 7, 2025, 6:21 amSurely Sheel wouldn't have made this control battle public if it would affect Sasaki's decision.
She could have waited a few weeks.....but didn't.
So either he's made his decision known to the Padres Org. or they've spoken to him about it in advance.
Too big of a signing to take the chance that this would chase him off IMO

Hard to know the timing triggers and what a delay would mean to her case. Seems the release that John Siedler was recommended as the new "control person" (has to be approved by MLB) may have accelerated the suit (which has to have been in play for some time given it is a 90+ page document prepared by a team of lawyers).
Same argument that the brothers could have waited to recommend the new control person ... they had to know he extent of the dispute issue with Sheel and as experienced businessmen expected a counter action.
Guessing neither sides sees Sasaki a bigger issue than who controls the Trust (and within that the Padres).
So maybe everyone knows the Sasaki outcome or maybe no one really cares given the long term consequences of long term control.

The NYY are rumored to be shopping Stroman, earning $18.5M this season. Wonder if we could swing an Arreaz/Peralta for Stroman and a prospect deal. Between the salaries of Arreaz and Peralta, Stroman should be a break even point.
Would add to SD rotation for zero dollars, and Niebla should help Stroman return to his better form. Then if we add Sasaki, would have a rotation of Cease, King, Darvish, Stroman, Sasaki, and Waldron or Vasquez for a 6 man rotation.

Does not help the objective of lowering the payroll ... probably forcing them to trade Cease. Cease > Stroman so just give them Arraez, keep Cease, and be better off?

I know we are tight on payroll, but seems like a deal SD could afford. Sounds like an opportunity missed IMO.
