He threw 174 innings last season with a 162 Ks and a 3.77 ERA. His arb number last season was $3.95M, so not sure what it would jump to for 2025 and/or what it would take to get him out of NY.
Roster Resource has his arb number at $7.7MM … FA after 2025.
Padres taking on the$7.7MM for a SP could be a roadblock (given the other needs) unless what goes to NY is an offsetting contact that fits the NYY needs.
NYY is losing RP … so Suarez ($9MM AAV) … Padres may be OK in the pen if they did that.
NYY is losing 2B (Torres … might resign) and 1B (Rizzo … should decline a $17MM option) … so Cronenworth? Of course, the Padres have nothing to replace Cronenworth at his level of production.
NYY don’t want prospects considering they want to “reload” for another pennant run and have a lot of FA holes. Money in 2025 (to start) is not their problem.
Hard to see a fit for a deal here.
The Yankees have Cole, Rodon, Gil, Schmidt, Stroman and Cortes all set to return. That's 6 pretty effective starters. I don't know how their depth is in the minors. I could see them making Cortes available if they're comfortable with their depth. 7.7m is probably less than what a similar caliber of starter would get on the open market. It seems like quality backend starters have been able to command 10-15m annually on 1-3 year deals pretty consistently. From that standpoint I could see AJ being interested. I don't know what a fair return would be. Maybe we could make use of some of our controllable young bullpen depth.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2024, 4:28 pmI guess the main issue is IF Cole opts out and then signs somewhere else. Then they would have more need at SP.
But I have not seen word on whether Cole has opted out yet. However, IIRC he is represented by Boras, so a definite possibility that he might. Even if it is to get more $$ from NYY.

What are the key dates?
Oct. 31: Eligible players became free agents. That started a five-day “quiet period” in which free agents could negotiate only with their own team. Also, the trade freeze has been lifted, and Major League players may be traded between clubs.
Monday: The deadline for teams and players to make decisions on contract options, the deadline for clubs to reinstate all players on the 60-day injured list and the deadline for clubs to tender qualifying offers. Also, the “quiet period” ends, and Major League free agents are free to sign with any club as of 2 p.m. PT. Minor League players become free agents at 2 p.m. PT, if applicable.
Tuesday-Thursday: General manager meetings in San Antonio, Texas.
Nov. 19: The deadline for players to accept a qualifying offer is 1 p.m. PT, and the deadline to add players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft is 3 p.m. PT.
Nov. 22: Tender deadline. By 5 p.m. PT on the Friday before Thanksgiving, teams must formally tender contracts to unsigned players for the following season, including their arbitration-eligible players. If a player is non-tendered, he becomes a free agent.
Dec. 9-11: Winter Meetings in Dallas, including the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 11.
Dec. 15: End of the 2024 international signing period.
Jan. 10, 2025: Eligible players and their teams exchange arbitration figures.
Jan. 15, 2025: Start of the new international signing period.

Cole could opt out BUT NYY can void that opt out by adding a year to his deal at about $35MM+/- … that is probably how that will play out.

Do think they would consider moving Cortes but only for a key return for their 2025 needs … and for that they could look to a lot of clubs other than the Padres. For the NYY don’t think the $7.7MM is a big issue to shed.
On the other hand, given the presumed Padre payroll squeeze with all the other upgrades needed … taking on that salary without shedding salary might not fit … that is why a Cortes for Suarez deal (at least as a base) is “balanced” money wise with SD relying on the cheaper RP to step up to Suarez’ role.
Could make the case the using Suarez in a deal Preller could land Cortes plus a prospect with Cortes being somewhat surplus (and a FA after the season) while Suarez is a leading closer (who will opt out after the season). Suarez > Cortes?

I would imagine WAY OUT of the SD monetary funds.

Don’t see where Wandy Peralta has a no trade … so possible he is a trade chip at only $4.4MM and that is not too bad for a LHRP these days. Padres have Matsui, Morejon, Cosgrove, and probably O. Cruz to cover the LHRP role plus a few other LH long shots. Sort of depends on the return since although every dollar is important … the $4.4MM is not outrageous.
Not surprised with Boras as his agent, Kim declines his part of the mutual option …has to test the FA market. Once Boras does the rounds (and if nothing compelling) would not be surprised Padres would be back in the mix with a “pillow” contact … low for 2025 (with incentives) but with a fairly large player option for 2026. Kim would still hit FA once he is fully healthy whether that is after 2025 or 2026 and he is still young. If the contract is structured well (maybe nice incentives on games played) and the Padres like the odds of him being back full strength by July … that could work both financially for the Padres and for a strong 2nd half pennant run. Also, could be good for Kim to do his rehab in an organization he is comfortable with and make his return with a team he knows and players who like him … that may be important vs trying to recover in a totally new environment.
Since I would not want to begin 2025 with Bogaerts at SS and move him mid season (same with Croney at 2B) … might lean towards a stop gaps SS for the first half (Ahmed?) who would be reality bumped for Kim. One clean change.
