2024-25 Offseason Talk
Quote from ultratvfan on October 31, 2024, 5:51 pmThe 2024 season is now officially over and the off season and free agency officially begins.
Juan Soto is now a free agent and his his asking price is $700 million+. At least 11 teams are already interested.
These contracts are outrageous and gotten way out of hand.

Quote from fenn68 on November 1, 2024, 10:08 amKeith Law has apparently come out with his FA list for the winter. “Different” as usual. Key for the Padres:
#9 Profar and #11 Kim. No estimate on money or linked teams but just the fact that someone of national note puts both so high suggests that potentially at least one or two teams will push their contract price up … probably up out of the Padres range.
Does make it more likely that both will explore FA rather than quickly coming to some deal with the Padres.
Side: Law really is not big on RP … so Scott is in the 40s.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2024, 10:25 amA possible rebound category signing for SD could Trey Mancini. After not playing much at all last season past ST for MIA, he has come to the decision that he wants to try once more at the ML level.
Could be a nice RH platoon partner for 1B or DH. Of course depending on his contract demands.

Given his recent past … hard to see more than a minor league deal that jumps a bit (with incentives) if he gets added to the 26 man roster.
On that basis … worth a shot. If he has other options … may seek a 1B/DH needy team in a more hitter’s friendly park.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2024, 10:41 amReading an article on CBS and they are suggesting that SD take a look at Nestor Cortez from NYY. He threw 174 innings last season with a 162 Ks and a 3.77 ERA. His arb number last season was $3.95M, so not sure what it would jump to for 2025 and/or what it would take to get him out of NY.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 1, 2024, 10:50 amIn that same article, the writer is also suggesting that TOR could trade Bichette. SD needs a SS and has an abundance of 2B. Could we something work out with Crone and Bichette trading teams? Not sure who they have at 2B, so not sure they need Crone. But there was some talk of Crone going to TOR last off season, so???
Maybe something around a Suarez ($10M) and Crone ($11.287M) for Bichette($16.5M)? SD would save about $4.79M this season.

Roster Resource has his arb number at $7.7MM … FA after 2025.
Padres taking on the$7.7MM for a SP could be a roadblock (given the other needs) unless what goes to NY is an offsetting contact that fits the NYY needs.
NYY is losing RP … so Suarez ($9MM AAV) … Padres may be OK in the pen if they did that.
NYY is losing 2B (Torres … might resign) and 1B (Rizzo … should decline a $17MM option) … so Cronenworth? Of course, the Padres have nothing to replace Cronenworth at his level of production.
NYY don’t want prospects considering they want to “reload” for another pennant run and have a lot of FA holes. Money in 2025 (to start) is not their problem.
Hard to see a fit for a deal here.

Can’t see TOR dealing Bichette (they have no one to take SS) while he coming off his worst season (injury). UNLESS they find a team that will take his full $17MM contract (FA after 2025) for a pack of quality low cost prospects … if they want payroll relief.
Of all the Padres needs … a high cost SS for 1 year is not a high priority.

Quote from fenn68 on November 1, 2024, 11:56 amListened to someone analyzing Sasaki … really highlighted some weaknesses to consider.
Injury concerns … has max at only 126 +/- innings … so issues with the quality his breaking ball … a couple of other issues. Basically don’t just assume he will drop in as an elite ML SP
I would offset that logic with the POTENTIAL in Sasaki well exceeds the $6MM+/- to sign him and carry him at league minimum. He does not have to be that good to justify the investment and he will have 6 years control.
However, a growing feeling that Sasaki will NOT enter the market.

Quote from fenn68 on November 1, 2024, 12:01 pmAs new players are being released to avoid arbitration … we can now add Ty France (whose ARB number would have been a bit over $8MM) .. he is now a FA.
RHH 1B/DH with a decent bat … he might be a decent low cost FA add.
Note: Padres are now down to 34 on the 40 man … probably 33 if Kim’s option is declined … and some others that are of less value than France … so roster room without a problem.
