2024-25 Offseason Talk

Does Jonathan Perlaza get a real chance at Left Field?

Anyone know more about him?

Looks like he was pretty consistent in AAA in ‘23 and last year in Korea.

Trade for Spencer Torkleson to play 1B?

Any chance he hits enough to play every day again?

Still only 25 and cheap for 3 more seasons

Probably ... right now it seems to be Ornelas with non-roster Gonzales and Perlaza in the hunt. Of course if the sign Profar the story changes.

Interesting mix ... Ornelas the prospect who may (or may not) be ready ... Gonzales a veteran who had a good season with CLEV a few yeas back the fill off the radar ... Perlaza who was a "nice" minor leaguer and had a "nice" Korean season. So, looks to be open season on LF.

Not for 1B ... he is terrible at defense. In the ML has only shown a power profile ... low AVG/OBP.

However, given the Padres needs ... might be worth considering since most don't think he will make the Tiger's 26 man and is still pre-arb (so minimum salary with an option year). Padres could use a RHH DH with power given their struggles vs LHP last season. For a 1:1 draft pick, he has not developed as much as they hoped.

Probably could get him for a second tier RP or if there is a bigger deal for a someone like Suarez ... he could be the 2nd or 3rd piece.

Teoscar Hernández re-gns with the Dodgers .to a three-year, $66 million deal with a $15 million club option for 2028

Hyeseong Kim's posting deadline is coming up on the 3rd. I saw a translation of a report from a Korean media company that said we were one of the 3 teams most aggressively pursuing him along with the Mariners and Angels. I've also heard that we are interested in Shinnosuke Ogasawara who could choose a team shortly after the New Year. Maybe landing or not landing either one of them will set some things in motion.

Corbin Burnes to the DBacks for 6 years and 210m.

$35MM AAV tops the SP FA class. HIs $210MM/6 years is just shy of Fried's $218MM but that is spread over eight years. Big money to top arms ...

Not good from the Padres' standpoint of having AZ sign him.

I guess if the Padres want to be contenders ... this may make it LESS likely to trade Cease (or King) even with the payroll issue even though his trade value has probably jumped.  Need pitching to win and the very little on the FA market (at expensive) and adding via trade of anyone good might be even hard to pull off (and cost a lot in the deal).

He had some good years as a lefty mashing utility guy. He didn't do very well in Japan in 2023 and didn't see any big league time last year. His minor league numbers were solid though. Maybe he can be a cheap platoon partner with Cronenworth. He also played with Roki Sasaki in Japan. It probably doesn't mean much, but it's an interesting little wrinkle.
