2023 Season
Quote from BoosterSD on August 1, 2023, 1:50 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2023, 1:31 pmIn 2021 a pretty average Giants team won 107 games….by basically doing the opposite of what we’re doing this year.
They just weren’t that good but won a crap ton of games.
It’s baseball….and PADRES baseball at that!
And I bet if you were to ask someone like Spilborghs or Nitkowski and others, they would say that there was "the guy" on that team that had that "attitude", that "something", that intangible that is just missing or not showing yet on this team.
I think we can agree that it is not the talent, there is plenty of talent on this team.
Its something though, and I am not sure that it can be fixed this season.

Quote from Stergios on August 1, 2023, 2:04 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2023, 1:07 pmBut,to hear the rest of the league talk Manny Machado is enough of a “Di*k” for everyone.
Who was this person last year when we made it to the NLCS?
I can’t get behind half of the reasons or excuses the experts have given on why we’ve been disappointing.
I guess because our hitting with RISP is the answer and everyone should know this but they gotta make something to talk about.
It has to be Preller!
Bob Melvin has to go!
This team has no chemistry!
They all got paid so now they don’t care!
🙄
Our lack of clutch hitting explains the 1 run losses and the Extra Inning losses and our record and why we can’t win with great pitching and defense and….
It’s ignoring the obvious for sake of the controversial in its finest form.
But what explains the piss poor avg. with RISP? And WHY exactly can we not hit a ball to the OF in order to score a guy from third? That’s my question. There has to a cause (or a few).

I mean maybe you’re right, but these are seasoned MLB hitters. To be unable to hit a SF yesterday in the 10th, or to have Manny drop the ball on the throw to third…we just find a way to lose.

I agree, he is a redass. And I dont really have an issue with him on the field, it was his dumbass shenanigans off the field that prevented him from playing that irked me in particular.

Yes, hitting with RISP is definitely the problem, but sometimes that has to do with attitude. A guy that is in the clubhouse that calls out Tatis after a bad at bat last night with the bases loaded.
I just know now that I have I heard on two different broadcasts XM and MLB Network and 5 different people have said the same thing, no grit/grind (redass) in this team. So, its not just me, although I see it too.
Who was it last year?........Could have been Profar, Alfaro, maybe Dixon during the stretch and playoffs. Maybe it was Manny, and now that Tatis is back, there is a different dynamic that stills needs to be worked out?
Not sure since I am not in the clubhouse, but whoever it was, it is missing this year for sure.
Yes…and Nitkowski isn’t the Clubhouse either…nor was he last year.
These guys have hours on the radio and have to talk about something.
It would only take 30 seconds to say “the Padres have sure been unlucky and/or just unable to get it done at key times in games this year”.
But to further the opinion that it’s chemistry or personalities or any other such things is what fills air time.
I do think every player is not the same when it comes to “clutch”.
Some argue there is no such thing…but MLB history is filled with guys who were just able to get it done when it mattered. But I also think a lot of it is just baseball luck.
Bases loaded and 1 out and the hitter hits it 110 off the bat right at the Shortstop for a double play.
Was he “unclutch or “unlucky”?
If he strikes out is he not trying hard enough or was the pitcher better in that AB?
Happens to every team….the thing is,it obviously doesn’t happen to every team equally throughout a 162 game season.
All it takes is 10-15 extra of these unlucky hits to be lucky and a teams record could be drastically different.
Obviously this is along with all the other intangibles in baseball…like the opponent….pitching, defense, injuries, etc etc etc.
Its just my opinion but I believe it is more of this (baseball luck and timing) and less of a few players attitudes and chemistry. These are the best of the best…I truly doubt Manny Machado or even the young Tatis needs someone to chew him out when he has a bad at bat with runners on base for him to “do better” next time.I’m pretty sure he wants to drive those runs in whether someone says something to him or not.Now if one of the players who “is in the Clubhouse” was to say they are missing a certain guy or a certain attitude I might agree with it more….

IF it was just these two, I could dismiss it as talk time. But is not, its multiple people, and I dont listen watch these shows often. So to hear it twice out of the 5 times I watched or listened in the last 20 days says something.
Nitkowski and Spilborghs may not be on the team, but as media people, they are in the clubhouse and do have a different perspective than you and I as former ML players. And there are 30 teams, and they do a 3 hour show, so they have plenty to talk about. And if the "grind" thing was for chat and stretching air time, one of them would disagree to keep the banter going. I have not heard any one on media refute the "grinder" attitude, so I do think there is something there.
I do think clutch and grinder are very similar. And yes, sometimes guys are unlucky that are grinders/clutch. But it happens too often on this team for it to be simply luck.
Yes, last night in particular, there were some unlucky hits right at people in the 10th, but it never should have got to that point, tied at 3 in Coors Field, there simply is no urgency in this team. They say there is in interviews, but their actions speak louder than words, and they are soft!

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2023, 4:48 pmPretty much the same lineup as last year except for the addition of Tatis and Xander.
Must be one,or both,of them.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 1, 2023, 5:35 pmI'm curious to see what happens with the active roster. Carpenter seems redundant with Choi on board. I don't think Melvin will want to carry 3 1B/DH types. Will they pull the plug on Carpenter and maybe bring someone like Azocar back?
Avila probably goes back to El Paso after tonight's game to make room for one of the pitchers. What's the second move? Garcia seems like the easy choice.

8 and 39
Those are the HR and RBI numbers for the 2 guys that have been predominantly hitting anywhere between 4-6 this year.
Yes, Soto and Machado got off to horrendous starts but these 2 have yet to do anything above replacement level, if that.
Hopefully Seidler brings in a new GM in October and can find a way to shift these guys.
