2023 Season
Quote from BoosterSD on July 25, 2023, 12:07 pmIve said it before, and I will say it again. Seidler is doing what a good owner should do, sign checks and stay out of the way the baseball people.
So the error in the plan IMO, has to be the baseball people. Is Preller just enamored with having his name in the press, and the fact that he finally has an owner that will let him sign big name FA? Or is Preller such a control freak, that despite any input from others in the FO, signs who he wants, despite the alternate issues it creates?
Because it really seems that this current team is put together haphazardly IMO. Musgrove contract was good, Darvish is OK, as it is back loaded and he is still a #2/3 pitcher. The Crone contract is probably about $25M more than it needed to be at this time. The Machado contract is fine, the same for Tatis, but the Bogaerts one is still IMO very, WTF?????
Having 6 SS on the same team seems irresponsible to me. Sure Machado is now really a 3B, and Tatis is better in RF really, Crone is better off bat to position wise at 2B, I think he puts too much pressure on himself to bat like a 1B, instead of just being himself at 2B, and Kim was wonderful last season at SS. So why Bogaerts?
Would it not have been better to spend money on some better SP/RPs instead of the Bogaerts?
So has Preller just become so infatuated with his name in the press as the "Rock Star" GM that he is making ill planned moves, or did others in the FO, say sure.......we need another $30M a year SS?
Either way, I think the time for Preller to go has come. Bring in someone that understands chemistry, grit, and spend money in a more appropriate way.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 25, 2023, 12:53 pmYeah, I'm happy with having Darvish for the next few years as well.
The Cronenworth signing was a head scratcher. And Bogaerts, even more so. His only real value going forward in San Diego is at 1B/DH.
Any chance you could throw in Jake with Hader and take nothing of imminent value in return? Surely a team looking for a closer could use a LH bat with multiple position ability? Or is his new contract just too prohibitive? As good as Jake is with the glove at 1B, his bat just doesn't play.

Quote from Stergios on July 25, 2023, 1:07 pmI get the sense that Yu wanted a certain sum and agreed to spread it out over six seasons instead of, say, 4.
Same with Crone. We bought out his chance to become a FA, so it’s understandable that asked for a large sum, and he may have accepted to get it spread out over more years. Due to his versatility and outstanding defence, Crone may actually end up making the deal less of an overpay than it seems to be at the moment.
And X is actually having a better season than Turner and Correa, and Swanson’s OPS is only .20 better.

Its not really the production that I have an issue with per se, it is the fact that those dollars could have been better spent elsewhere, and not disrupted the top notch INF defense of last season.
A real DH, a real 1B, and/or additional SP/RPs all would have been smarter ways to spend the money, instead of the headline grabbing, head scratching move of signing Bogaerts.

Yes a bundle of Hader (or Snell) with Cronenworth (and his contact) could work if they find a team that falls into that sweet spot of knowing they will be in the playoffs … need a closer … and have a spot for a 2B over the next few years … and Padres get nothing of quality in return. Finding that team is really a long shot.

A big part of my issue is using this stretch out strategy over so many players creating a lot of “dead money” in a few years just to lower AAV in the short run … also turns into an excuse to over pay.
I can understand the players wanting a certain amount but that is not a reason to pay it … but a Darvish even for 4 years / $26MM per is, in my view, an overpay for an aging player. Cronenworth just did not need to have his FA years bought out with 3 years of a series of declining production years while still under control for 3 years via arbitration. Even at that point was not even sure wanted him after his control years.
Padres are building a future of multiple Hosmer dead money scenarios.
Did not … in isolation … have an issue in signing Bogaerts … at 30 has a good 5-6 years at his all-star level (not overly comfortable with the dollars / length) but that is the market for his level of talent. However, locking down both Bogaerts and Cronenworth long term seems ill advised unless already planning on moving on from Kim and expecting little for Merrill in a couple of years.
Again can make a case for each signing in isolation … it is the cumulative impact of all the signings that will present a short and long term problem

Quote from sportwarrior on July 25, 2023, 2:47 pmI'm listening to a Tatis interview, and he keeps talking about how winning will depend on how "personal" the guys take it to win. Over and over. I cannot help but feel like he's talking about Soto.
Fenn, you recently posted something backing up this idea, as well. It just kinda feels like Soto isn't integrating with the team and that's playing for himself. Machado and Tatis and Boegarts all talk with the same, softly spoken party line... not a lot of enthusiasm, as if they're trying to will the negative parts of the clubhouse into a positive place and have been for months, but are just tired of it.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 25, 2023, 4:01 pmThe lack of production from Cruz,Cronenworth and especially Carpenter is making the Bogaerts signing seem even worse.
If Jake and Carpenter were producing…if we didn’t have a 1b/DH black hole…..no one would be taking issue with Xanders production this year.
How his signing looks in 5-6 years remains to be seen…..but Carpenter in particular is making everyone wish we had used X’s $ on someone else.

Might expand that beyond Soto to include Snell and Hader ... all three seem to be focused more on their next contract (and therefore stats and health) than giving it up for the team. Just my perspective. Might be others but they are not keys to this club.
What will be interesting in the post season meeting between Manny and Preller / Siedler ... Manny's input (honest input) as to the players not pulling their weight. Manny seems to have a lot of influence in these matters. Snell and Hader will be FA but maybe Manny's input shuts down any attempt to re-sign (if there was going to be any). Doubt anything will generate a trade of Soto but could also influence any attempt to extend him.
Padres going forward will still have a strong core of Manny, Tatis, Bogaerts, Musgrove plus hopefully Darvish and Suarez meet expectations. Have to hope none of them are the target of Tatis' comments ... don't think so.

Actually wish we could have used Carpenter's dollars ($12MM/2 years) on someone else and still got substantially better production.
