2023 Season

We got 1 down.. for a few months likely..

Wacha signing looking huge

Dumb luck for sure, and a big loss for SD.

As we all know, pitching depth is huge for a team with WS aspirations. Groome or Weathers is going to have to step up know.

Or knowing AJ, some trade will come along now, to add some additional depth.

Hard to replace that caliber of pitcher though.

Probably mid-April return at the earliest - somewhere around the same time as Tatis comes back.  Fortunately, Musgrove keeps himself in excellent shape and although he won't be able to pitch or run for awhile, I'm sure he'll find other ways to stay physically ready.  It all depends upon the severity of the injury.  We should know the extent of that soon.  Likely miss around 8 starts; depth has to step up.

You all are still focusing on his OBP, while I am focusing on his BA, OBP, and SLG. He is the best slugging percentage on the team as well as OBP. I think its a waste of his entire ability batting him 2nd, and not what we traded for IMO. We traded for the combo of average, OBP, and slugging which I think is proven is at his best in the 3rd or 4th spot. So whether its Tatis or Bogaerts in the 1st and 5th spot, I still think the best offense SD can put on the field is with Machado 3rd and Soto 4th, filling the line up around that.

He can still hit a 2b or HR hitting 2nd.

He can still drive in Xander or Kim or Grish.

Plus he will get more AB’s.

I mean….if we are even considering hitting Tatis #1 hitting Soto #2 shouldn’t be a concern.

Really not worth trying to figure out what’s best…BoMel gonna do what he likes and if the “Four Fathers” all stay healthy it won’t matter much.

Hard to speculate on how long Musgrove will be out. Toe injury could be a small issue or  bigger depending on if (and how) the impacts his delivery … push off / landing. Don’t want him altering his delivery and then have that lead to arm issues.

However, if out the month of April … coupled with the early preference for a 6 man rotation … who steps into that 6th slot? Could be an interesting issue in ST. I would guess they would prefer a SP that can be optioned when Musgrove returns (disadvantage for the likes of non-roster Teheran and Hamels). Hopefully not RP games which start to burn out the pen early in the season.

Groome? Morejon? Avila? Knehr? Maybe Honeywell who is out of options and risk of being claimed off waivers if DFA at the end of ST … just delay that issue?

If Musgrove is only a one month issue … not likely to add anyone at this stage better than the in-house options … even though likely to have a number of 40 man roster slots open at the end of ST as the DFA some out of option RP.

I would imagine, based on ST performance, it would be either Morejon or Honeywell. If Morejon, it could burn a fair amount of Morejon's innings for this season, but then could option him down to AA, and then have him go on short starts or skip starts to monitor his innings. And for the reasons you state, Honeywell could be an option to delay the DFA situation.

I think it will be Groome.....he just looks like he's gonna win the job.

But,if we're gonna lose one of the non roster options at the end of ST anyway,if they pitch well enough we may as well use them for a month and then lose them when Joe returns

0.00 ERA 1.09 Whip.. 3.2 IP 4ks..  Groome doing the work

Also Crismatt (new pitch is nasty)/Teheran looked terrific/Avila was nasty..all small samples... We still haven't seen Font..

With no options (Crismatt) and (I heard) Teheran's opt out option after ST if not on the OD roster.. we may have some though decisions incoming.. I wouldn't be surprised on a move or 2 in the BP..including perhaps a trade "for" Lopez(rule V).. if they like him enough to keep him (off the 40).. so ogger him back and work out a trade..Cant see him (on this team) taking up a valuable 26th spot

Its way too early to use performance to date for anyone, including Weathers, Groome, Crismatt, and Lopez, let alone roster decisions.

Wont have a good idea of the ability of these pitchers until the middle of March.
