2023 Season
Quote from Henry Silvestre on May 25, 2023, 8:12 pmQuote from 3fingersplit on May 25, 2023, 7:55 pmSomebody asked me this question...IF the Padres actually brought back Hosmer and that is a really BIG IF...seeing as they already are paying him 12 million anyway...would they have to sign him to a league minimum contract ?
I believe so

One of the best C plays in Padres history if not MLB.. I love Sully.. he can be my teams #2 C for a while.. and is obviously #1 now..
What a play this was. (And, as it turned out, a critical one.) https://t.co/zyJBp3NOqa

From what I have heard people are split on a Hosmer reunion...I don't see it given the way he was dealt last season but I do remember that him and Machado carried the team for the first 2-3 months last year. Given the fact that we are getting so little out of Cruz and Carpenter and with Kim getting hurt...AJ wouldn't give him a call would he ?
Thank you Henry

Quote from fenn68 on May 26, 2023, 5:20 amA no on Hosmer. I have not forgotten the anti-Hosmer sentiment for his last two seasons with the Padres and the Padres trying hard to move him (unsuccessfully) going to the point where they had to eat his entire salary to be Boston to take him. No longer could field and his bat was not going to carry him.
It has gotten worse … even at league minimum Boston released him after a .631 OPS the the Cubs released him after a .610 OPS. KC yesterday basically came out and said they had no interest in bring him back. Have to wonder why and is there an issue beyond just the poor numbers?
Just my speculation after watching him but over the past few years (beyond he stats) his motivation seems to have faded (maybe the contract / maybe marriage) and despite his past reputation as a great club house leader … maybe “liked” by the players but not so much focused on bettering the team/management dynamic. Again, just speculation, but when teams don’t want him even at league minimum they must be looking beyond the stats.

Quote from fenn68 on May 26, 2023, 10:34 amIglesias opts out of his minor league contract with the Padres. That was a short stint ... I guess the Padres may have indicated they would not add him even with the injury to Machado and the injury to Kim and he went seeking a ML deal from someone else.
Note that worked for Teheran who just opted out and signed a ML deal with MILW and was their starter last night.

Quote from BoosterSD on May 26, 2023, 11:34 amOf course we are barely 2.5 games in front of COL; with most of us thinking that there is a hot streak coming to put us back in contention, does Preller make a move to bring back Profar? If Grisham is not improving with the bat, could we see Tatis go to CF, and Profar man RF, and become the lead off hitter? Maybe I should have given a little more credit to Profar being a chemistry guy than I did.

Well I would try to bring him back. Beyond being a spark for the 2022 Padres he has the versatility to play all the OF … 1B/2B … DH. Hitting well this year especially vs RHP and given the struggles by Padre LHH in Grisham, Carpenter, and Cronenworth he could move around and fit in as needed.
A FA after 2023 on a $7.75MM deal … the last place Rockies probably could be motivated by a mid-range prospect(s) … pitchers are always in favor and Padres have enough “good enough” AAA/AA types to work.
Probably would bump either Azocar or Dixon off the 26 man.

Obviously Profar's numbers are Colorado-ized, but I was certainly a proponent of re-signing him. And yes, would gladly take Jurickson back into the team.
He played 1B for us on occasion yes? How about moving Jake back to 2B and giving Profar and Carpenter 1B duties? Maybe we can get the Rockies to throw in a AAA catcher????

Agree … when Machado and Kim (who was one of the more productive hitters in May) return they will start … forcing some tough decisions given the play of Odor and Dixon (and the poor play of Cruz and Carpenter).
The tough decision is what to do with Cruz and Carpenter who have been very very bad in May. Machado off the IL means drop someone (Dixon or Azocar can be optioned). If it is Cruz is there an issue with the Dominican players who look at Cruz and a leader / legend… if Carpenter he is on a larger contract with a player option for 2024 meaning Padres would be eating even more dead money. Who has the best chance to contribute going forward? Is there a phantom IL on the horizon? To note:
1. Cruz
323/338/565 (62 AB) .. Apr … 16 RBI
147/194/147 (34 AB) … May … 0 RBI … 14 K
2. Carpenter
271/393/583 (48 AB) … Apr … 15 RBI
111/238/185 (54 AB) … May … 5 RBI … 24 K (that is huge in 54 AB)
Who goes? Both are “old” but guess Carpenter has the better chance to slightly rebound and at least he can play a field position in case of injury. Leads me to Cruz as the odd man out … but Padres probably don’t go that route NOW.
I guess Azocar who has not been getting much playing time and only serving as the back-up CF if Grisham get hurt. Gamble a bit … play Grisham full time and IF injured Azocar is a plane flight away and in the interim slide Tatis to CF and back fill RF with Dixon / Odor.
