2023 Season

PreviousPage 21 of 95Next

I’m so stoked that Jake will be here for the next 7 years plus. I remember seeing him very early on and commenting here on this forum that the game was not too big for him and that he reminded me of just a total grinder field rat.

The “Crone” zone will be a part of padres history 👍

Congrats to Jake for a well deserved and well earned contract that keeps him an integral part of this organization for years to come

4.25 million this year and another 7 years at 80 million is a fair contract for both Jake and the Padres….great job by AJ and of course Peter Seidler…next up…Hader, Soto , Snell and the final piece of the puzzle…Shohei Otani…one can dream 😃

The truth is, 10 mill a year isn’t a lot of money these days.  It’s hard to imagine getting a decent offensive player who can be a super UTIL guy defensively for less than that.

Especially in 4-5yrs when $10 mil might be Solid Vet bench guy $$..If Jake just plays at 2022 levels this deal is a ++.. if he plays at avg career levels this is a steal..

The fact that we are 3 and 2 with Manny OPS at .541 and Soto at .613 and Nola at .522 and Jake at .247 (yikes) out of the gate .. tells you this Team is going to be epic.. Oh and Tatis hasn't even played.. Its been Kim and Boggarts show both on fire, and the supporting cast of CARP/GRISH/and others all over .800 OPS..

We going to have some fun in 2023

And not a single inning from our top 2 Starters.

But,it has been the Rox and D-Backs.

Let's get 3 of 4 from Atlanta eh?

DFA Crismatt

Bring up Groome….(no I don’t care about his El Paso stat line)

Move Nick to Bullpen

Figure out why it takes Snell 1/2 season to trust his stuff enough to throw strikes

Pitching improved

We are 2 games into an 18 game straight stretch.. and our starters haven't helped the cause... I am sure we will see 2 maybe 3 guys come up to help... Musgrove will be one towards the end of the stretch.. but probably Moised Lugo and Felipe could get a couple of outings to help the BP.. who between Yu not being stretched out and Snell and Martinez not giving us innings these last 3 starts is getting taxed..a bit too much..early on... we need a Wacha 6IP + effort tomorrow for sure..follow by an equal 6+ from Lugo Sunday..

We knew going into the season that pitching will be a work in progress … and in Crismatt and Hill’s cases their work last season should give them more time to get their 2023 in line.

What most thought was that this offense would carry the team … especially with that top for elite hitters …. Bogaerts is delivering. Machado had a slow start in the clutch. Tatis is out. For now the major concern should be my usual target Soto.

If watching the game is defense is LF is … well … bad (maybe worse OF defense than in 2022). The elephant in the room is his hitting (or lack of hitting). As a $23MM man and hailed as a great hitter … he is floundering. Consider:

242/408/485 … 342 AB with WASH in 2022

236/388/390 … 182 AB with SD in 2022

138/286/276 … 29 AB with SD in 2023

The media has a world of excuses for his lack of elite hitting when he came over to SD … but realistically he was already having his worst season when with WASH (.242 is not the average of an elite hitter).

BA/OBP/SLG all dropping and from the games I watched … an inordinate number of ground balls to 2B.

We can HOPE this is just a bump in the road but after last season the start of this season has to cause concern … for a $23MM man who is ticketed as a critical piece of the 2023 line-up whose expected impact cannot be replaced.

Not making any excuses.. BUT he dealt with calf + back injury last yr.. He dealt with Calf + Obkique Injury so fat in 2023.. He started ST healthy and ON FIRE.. that batter (swing and all) is not the same we are seeing right now.. I saw a few positives in last night's game BUT I can assure you he is going through some new Physicsl/Psychological challenges he had not encountered at anytime before in his career..

With that said... as I've said before..I WOULDNT extend Soto.. His physical build worries me (beyond his defensive liability) he is bigger version of Pablo Sandoval/Cecil Fielder in his youth.. and we know how both of these guys aged...

Revisiting the totality of the trades +Bell/Drury/Hader and Soto.. It was an immediate +Plus+ for us for 2022 ..and it will help in 2023 and perhaps beyond

BUT- We certainly could use Gore 2-0 (only 2 W for Nats in 2023) 2.45 ERA + CJ .833 OPS so far in 2023...

Bottomline - hoping for Soto to have a Huge 2023 and 24 .. BUT NOT Extending him at/or anywhere near his asking $$..because of future Physical concerns ..

I thought the Pen would be a strength….then again I expected Morejon /Suarez /Castillo to be in there and Pomeranz soon.

I figured Crismatt would be a 5th-6th inning guy only…if he even made the Pen.

We need Suarez back and to remain healthy at minimum. That along with moving Nick,Lugo or Weathers to the Pen will help a lot.
