2023 Season

PreviousPage 15 of 95Next

May be a case where Groome deserves the #6 spot but Honeywell gets it so we don't lose him.

Then switch them later depending on production or after an injury.

We need to hold on to him no matter what...We're gonna need a couple of these guys(Groome,Honeywell,Teheran,Weathers) after this season to step up and take a spot in the rotation.

Speaking of which....what ever happened to Font

I can see both Groome and Honeywell making the roster ... might rotate initially who is #6 based on the opponent's line-up (better vs LHP or RHP). The other factor may be who is better suited to work out of the pen.

Early in the season ... especially if a game is one sided early ... Melvin may use a long man to work as much as 4 innings while still building up the starters pitch counts.

First couple of weeks should be a good audition for both.

It's starting to feel like Soto is going to have a monster year.

Honeywell has still not had a good or even decent spring outing

He was pretty nasty after a terrible inning.. his control did him in..still had a ton of swing and miss ..

Profar finds a home in Colorado.

$7.75MM base up to $8.75 with 400 PA.

So he did come out ahead money-wise after opting out from the Padres’ $7.5MM and receiving a $1MM buyout.

Something tells me he regrets the decision despite coming out slightly ahead financially

And he had a $10mil option which 💯 would have been picked up with 2 WAR or better season..so not sure he came out ahead at all.. traded potentially $17.5 mil for potentially $9.5 (with buyout and incentives met). SO unless he signs another $8mil + deal in 2024 .. he would be behind.. and now he doesn't get postseason $$ and to play with his best friend/s..

I think that $10MM was a mutual option for 2024 ... not 2023. Almost never are mutual options exercised.

For 2023 he had a $7.5MM player option (with a $1MM buyout) ... that is what he declined and took the buyout.

Even not happy with the money he ended up with ... he may have been looking at the Padres when he made the opt-out and saw he was displaced by Tatis and Soto and possibly relegated to part-time (not good for the 2024 contract and going forward) along with coming of a season where most of the FA projections had him multi-year in the $10MM AAV range.

So, make a bit more in 2023 but gets to play (we think) near full time in COLO to reenter the FA market (a weak one) next winter.

Well I guess Campusano is our starting catcher?  Huge glaring hole on this team right now.
