Connor Joe just got traded to the pirates…prequel to a Reynolds deal? Anyone know much about the minor leaguer they got in return? Padres could have used him

3rd round pick out of Chapman College in 2020 … 23 … did well in A+ last year as a SP.

Running out of FA (of any quality) on the market … and for the Padres they should be targeting a specific skill mix … hitter who can play corner OF / 1B.

First need a decent 9th bat in the line-up but also consider they need a RF for the first 20 games and, given Tatis’ injury history (leg, back, shoulder, wrist), need a player that can step into the OF for an extended run. Reason to say away from the1B/DH only profile. So maybe two adds.

As it stands the leading candidates for RF and 9th hitter to start the season are Azocar (R) and Dahl (L)(non-roster). After Tatis’ return they are likely the platoon DH. That is a lot of wishful thinking on a career minor leaguer in Azocar and a player rebounding from three years of bouncing between the ML/Minors with minimal success in Dahl.

No idea on what the contract demands (but should be “reasonable” at this point) but consider two of the following:

1 LHH: Gamel or Peralta

2 RHH: Myers or Anderson

* maybe switch hitter Robbie Grossman as a fall back or go for the back-up catcher in Barnhart who (besides C insurance) frees up Nola / Campusano to provide the RHH DH/1B role.

Priority #1 needs to be coverage of a corner OF (9th hitter) profile.

AJP out here playing checkers and the MLB not countering his moves.. "wild times"

We got Shrek .. Puss in Boots next?

Trey Mancini 1B/RF/DH looks good to me

I think we need 2 Bats .. to "lengthen" our lineup 9 and 10th hitters once Tatis returns.. and Insurance 8 and 9 through 4/20 + injuries...  Preferably RH/LH (one of each)

Don't rule out a reunion with Franmil. I think coming back to San Diego would serve both him and the Padres well. Minor League deal invite to ST incentives up to 5-6 mil. Could fill in at DH and in the outfield at the beginning of the year and be a good power threat bench piece. Franmil, Myers, Drury, Profar, Conforto, Mancini, Grossman, Blackmon all make sense.

Guessing there is not a meeting of the minds between Franmil and Preller since to me it seem like a no brainer to bring Reyes back on a minor league deal. Not even a minor league deal with a ML split since his 2022 was less than stellar waived by CLEV then released by CUBS.

At his size, appears to be a DH only these days … and a lot of other options on the market … so not great position for Reyes to make demands. He had a $4.5MM deal last season … but would guess more of a Drury 2022 deal in the $1-2MM range if he makes the ML club.

He needs to find a spot where he is in the ML and playing every day … even as a DH … to build a resume for a 2024 deal … not sure that is on a playoff contender.

I don’t think we would want to see Mancini in the OF … he is not good. Looks as though he is really just a DH these days … Padres don’t need/want a DH only type … not at what his price is likely to fall.

Padres need an legit OF who can field along with a decent bat.

I agree with what you said fenn…somebody who could play cof/1b/DH

Wil Meyers or Drury would work and to whoever said AJP is playing checkers…he is actually playing 3D chess and the downside is minimal…if his minor league pickups don’t work then not a great deal lost but if he hits on any of them…it’s a bonus and might have some other trade chips to use

I think Reyes and his agent are hoping for a MLB deal.. come ST if still unsigned I can see AJP getting him to AAA El Paso.. but his bat and approach have no room for in San Diego.. if I was Reyes I'd be on the phone with Cincy, Detroit, and teams headed nowhere in 2023.. He is not versatile enough or good enough (as DH only) to be in a contender

I think (position wise) ..we need 3 things

1 a Def 1st Catcher (aka Banhardt)

LHB - COF preferred (Peralta like)

DH/1B - Mancini/Voit/Wil (OF+)/Drury (2B/3B/maybe COF+)/

Who knows some of these newly acquired guys Dahl/Tucker/Schroon along with Dixon/Batten and Rosario could claim one of those needs if not both... still would like a Veteran FA though, to lengthen that bench + these guys above..............................................

Thompson (break out in LAD) would look so nice right about now.. man that was a big miss by BoMel not playing him...
