Jairo Iriarte, 21, was the star on the backfields. We had him listed as our number 13 prospect coming into the year, and on Friday, he flashed some of the electric stuff we described. One of the many Padres international prospects from Venezuela sat in the mid-90s with his fastball to go along with a nasty slider. The Kansas City Royals farmhands had a tough time with his riding fastball up in the zone, and he showed an improved command of his changeup from last year in Lake Elsinore.
Iriarte, 22, is ticketed for High-A Fort Wayne and should be part of a solid rotation featuring Victor Lizarraga, 19, who may have been the best pitcher in the California League at times last summer.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 13, 2023, 12:48 pmThat the TinCaps are in the playoffs says a lot about the coaching staff and the current players on that team. You have to remember that the Padres gutted almost the entire starting rotation in mid-July as well as Merrill and Castanon and then followed that up on 22 August by promoting the heart of the line-up (Marsee, Martorella and Pauley). If the Padres really wanted to have 3 playoff teams, they probably would have at LE, FtW and SA if they kept everyone in place. However, their developmental theory is to expose them to higher levels of competition to give them a leg up on next year's assignments. Guys like Salas weren't quite ready for those rapid promotions, but others like Merrill and Pauley have prospered.
Kudos have to go out to the TinCaps staff for all those distractions to grabbing a playoff spot and to the current group of players who are showing a lot of heart and desire to try to win it all. As a fan, love to see a team like this succeed!

Quote from fenn68 on September 13, 2023, 1:28 pmExtra kudos to Robbie Snelling who went 5 innings yielding only 3 hits, 0 walks, and only 1 run (a HR) … in a pressure playoff game.
I am not usually one to believe a HS prospect can (should) zip up the system too quickly … but Snelling is making me change my mind (as is Salas).
Keep in mind Snelling was just drafted last year and did not pitch in a game at any level for the Padres. So, this is not only his first professional season … but as a HS pitcher he has dominated in A, A+, and now AA as a 19 year old. Overall 11-3 with a 1.82 ERA in 103.2 innings and in AA 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA in 17.1 innings. That more than impressive and either he was already better than the scouting suggested or he has really developed under the Padres development staff.
I now I would not be surprised if Snelling was a mid-2024 call-up (expect him to begin in AA) but with what is currently shaping up as a not very deep ML SP staff … the combination of his quick development and a clear Padre needs … his ML arrival may just be sooner than I would have projected … 1 1/2 years out of HS! (Note that Weathers was up maybe sooner than we expected … so in the Padres’ DNA).
Not ready to declare Snelling the next Kershaw … he still could peak out before reaching elite levels … but at least have to be really encouraged. Plus if Lesko lives up to his hype … should be a year behind setting up the core of a really good young / low cost SP duo for years.
With Musgrove and Darvish locked in for another 4 years … might make it easier for the Padres to focus on adding SP now but only on short term deals.
