A number of ways to spin the following but consider the slash lines for SD vs. previous team for:

Soto: 326/463/512 vs 248/408/485 ... clearly as advertised

Bell:140/288/163 vs 301/384/493 ... a real head scratcher given his career

Drury: 200/280/444 vs 274/335/520 ... if it were not for the three high profile HR a disaster

Basically 43-45 AB with SD so ... small sample size and we should expect a hot streak for Bell / Drury to approach their "norm" (good) OR the change of teams / ballparks had enough impact to depress their performance for the rest of the season which is also short (bad).

Added pressure on Melvin ... playing the under performing deadline adds or start selectively re-inserting Myers (been hot as a PH) and Mazara? It is about winning NOW and not the past or future of the individuals.

Not doing well for the FA of Bell or Drury.

I feel like Bell will still be fine.

As for Drury....if those two homeruns he hit that were robbed on great defensive plays made it over the fence his numbers would be close....esp his Slug

Oh...and you forgot Hader.

Please don't do Hader.:)

To be fair Drury should have 2 more HRs ..2 hits.. and he puts together quality ABs... Bell has struggled driving (barreling) the ball ..Petco has not really been a factor since his balls haven't been on the air much... We need both to get going... Dont know about Mazars he was slumping way before the deadline..But agree 100% on Wil he has been hitting the ball well ..

Miami is better than the Rox,Reds,Pirates and Cubs.

Their Starters alone make them tough.

It is what it is….just putting it out there.

Look at Miamis Home record and look at Rockies home record... Rockies are a very good team at Coors..and Miami is one of the worst (if not the worst) team at Home

I love your optimism and usually share it…..but surely I am not the only one that saw this coming.

Check the ERA’s of the Reds starters and the Rox starters compared to the Marlins.

I saw no way we were gonna score 4+ in these two games.

I’m not even sure about tomorrow.

RP Brandon Kintzler ..Very interesting signing.. to minor league deal.. One of the better ground ball inducing RP artist of the last decade+... 2021 was rough.. but 2020 was very good.. so likely not an age thing (38)..  postseason experience a big +

Given it is Aug 18 and he is 38 and not pitched in 2022 … doubt he has the time in 2022 to get into game shape … prove he is a better option for the ML club that the others here.

Is it possible this signing came with a 2023 minor league contract with an invite to ST?

Wonder how this deal came to be at this point in the season … agent called Preller or someone from the Padres sought him out? Hard to see him being on anyone’s radar right now (or he would have signed by a RP needy team well before this if all it took was a minor league deal).

Any idea if he had been pitching in an independent league?..

Have not seen any indication he was pitching anywhere in 2022.

Just an off the wall fact ... Kindler was drafted (40th round) and signed by the Padres in 2004 and spent a couple of years in the system before being released. Maybe signing in 2022 is closing the loop.

At the trade deadline Preller and Siedler were roundly praised nationally for going “all in” and dealing for major stars in Soto, Bell, Hader, and Drury … all had the resumes for this year and their past to really take the Padres to the next step.

However, inexplicably it has gone all wrong with only 41 games to play … not for just one but basically all four. This was a short term impact play to win NOW and the extremely poor performance of their first 15 games (against the easier part of the stretch run) may cost the playoff position.

Bell (56 AB) .125 BA / .161 SLG (vs .301 BA / .493 SLG in WASH)

Drury (54 AB) .204 BA / .4o7 SLG (vs .274 BA / .520 SLG in CINN) … actually less impressive after his initial games

Hader (4 games) .273 BAA / 2.10 WHIP (vs .203 BAA / 1.12 WHIP in MILW) … 0 Saves / 1 Blown Save

And I will guardedly include Soto … yes walking a lot per his reputation and his .302 BA is better than his .246 in WASH … but his SLG is down from .485 to .453 which statistically not bad but his HR production is way down. Can’t really complain but not sure the high BB/doubles profile is what the Padres needed … more HR power in the clutch.

Could turn on a dime and they all pound it … hopefully against the “better” competition in September.

I know it is totally unfair and ill advised to evaluate a player (good or bad) after just 16 games … so I will.

Soto is rated by almost everyone in MLB as one of the greatest hitters of all time … clearly the pitchers think so since they just don’t pitch to him even with Manny who his red hot hitting behind him. Soto is by far leading the league in walks and is at an all-time record pace of non-intentional walks in a season. Stat-wise he is delivering that high OPS.

However, for a player projected to demand the highest contract ever in FA … he just does not seem to take over a game and drive a win. Frankly I find his AB boring with little anticipation of a big hit and just watching him not swing, and work a walk (great for stats …not so much for entertainment),

Maybe because he is not HITTING … already a little annoyed by the announcers hype the “Soto shuffle” and more by Soto’s reactions to calls he does not like (even if correct call).

I suppose I will change once (if) Soto starts hitting and leading the team to wins … but for now not worth the largest contract of all time.
