I guess I am hung up on what I saw of Tatis in the OF ... he was bad on routes and jumps not just throws. CF would be a disaster for him and the Padres no matter how athletic he is. IF (and that is a big IF) they want him in the OF ... RF where he should do less damage and his arm would play.
One comment suggested the OF may be a better health option for his shoulder given fewer all out throws vs. SS. Let us not forget he did not have the shoulder surgery ... so that may still be a concern beyond the wrist.
If the Padres see Tatis' future in the OF ... probably should sit him in one spot (RF) in ST and let him develop his defense there full time. Clearly the Padres will need OF in 2023 and have Kim / Abrams to cover SS.
2023: Profar (re-signed); Grisham (L)/Ruiz; Tatis COULD be a decent OF rotation. INF of Machado; Kim/Abrams; Cronenworth COULD be a decent INF rotation. 1B/DH TBD.
I would play Tatis in RF ... a few chances ..protects his body..no risk... keep Kim/CJ in at SS.. Tatis speed and arm in RF would be elite ... CJ could bump Grish from CF much easier as he has some experience there.. and from film I've seen has a good jump and +++ speed at CF...so if his bat gets HOT when Tatis comes back... CJ could be a CF option
For 2023.. Tatis/Ruiz/Crish could all get plenty of reps at CF (as could CJ if Tatis goes back to the dirt)...and may the best Bat/Def combo win...Obviously Tatis would be the best hitter... but if his D is a negative against that he might be better off in RF...where his ++ power plays...and his speed could make balls hit in the gap nothing more than running catches ...
Ideally with in house options for 2023.. Profar (ressigns) in LF/Ruiz CF/Tatis RF... Grish late D replacement in CF/ PH/4th OF type role..unless Ruiz struggles... whomever plays CF might have a short frame of time to hold onto it...cause WOOD has Future All Star type naked eye look to him... and if Hassell III still here he too looks extremely good... Assuming our current OF situation from A ball to AAA... we have some very very good group of players who could be in SDP anytime from Now to 2024... Rooker/Ruiz/Ornelas/Ona/Hassell iii/Wood/Mears/Howell... others....

Quote from fenn68 on July 2, 2022, 4:31 pmThe upside of Ruiz (2023), Hassell (2024-5), and Wood (2025-6) coupled with Tatis sitting in RF has the potential to be an All-Star level OF/DH rotation. Really would hold on to that level of talent and not use any of them for a short term add.
Machado and Abrams will still be around through 2028, so that could be 6 elite players in that 2025-28 window. Merrill (2025-6) is a potential replacement of Cronenworth who is only under control through 2025 (and will be in his 30s). So maybe 7 elite. Extend Cronenworth for 1B … 8 elite. OK a bit optimistic but can dream.
Every team will have holes … even in the optimistic scenario will be looking for catchers and pitchers. Hope for the draft / international signings.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 3, 2022, 4:48 amI think this Dodger series, despite the fact we know Tatis is out and Manny is not 100%,has made it pretty obvious we need to shake things up.
I’m not sure why Castillo has not been called up?
I’m hoping we can find a bat w/o having to lose Abrams/Hassell/Ruiz/Wood/Gore.
Does getting Myers back help?
He has more power but Mazara and Azocar have hit fairly well….we just need some thump.
Does AJ rest on his laurels knowing we have BP help,Tatis/Myers and Manny getting healthier on the way?
Does a package of guys like Campy/Rosario/Acosta/Mears get us what we need?
Do we add more to get an OF under control a couple years?

I am willing to throw in Hassell in a deal for a Hays or Reynolds (try to do it with Mears but I can see Orioles asking for Hassell (top 30ish type spec in MLB) as part of those deals .. in the OF Wood is the one I am not willing to move...
With that said Hassell only moves on 2 1/2 ++ controlled guys... not for 2 month rentals and not for 1 1/2 control guys like Happ.. I would do anyone not in our top 5 ..even 2 *non top 5* in a deal for Happ or Santander

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 3, 2022, 6:18 amI dont think Myers sees another AB as a Padre ... his power disappeared he will take too long to get right (a month) and Mazara is playing way above Myers capabilities atm...ride with Mazara and go get Happ/Santander or go Big and get Hays or Reynolds...
I am still trying to figure out a way to get Jansen (Blue Jays C) for Snell... need Jays to add their top P prospect (name escapes me) close to top 100 type spec

P Ricky Tiedemann #91 is who I was referring to....
SNELL + KOWHLEY + ORNELAS type for Jansen + Tiedemann
Tiedemann would slide to #5 in our top 30 with Woods dropping to #6 (MLB #100) giving us 6 top 100.. with Merrill just needing a healthy 2nd half to make it 7..
Not sure dreaming on CY Snell (a real need in Toronto SP) gets us those 2 .. but I'd try..Snell needs one more start like his last 2 (yes he was outstanding vs Phillies before hitting Harper) to peek his current value in the trade market... Tiedemann gives us a Top arm prospect to pair and dream on with Susana

My guess as to why Castillo has not been brought up (other than not being on the 40 man) is that the Padres are still trying to get him conditioned to pitch back to back games / multiple games in a short span. Getting close I think. Can’t really afford to have a RP available on a limited basis.
Myers is now taking batting practice and Melvin does not think it will take long (if his knee holds up) long to be back. I probably have more hope that Myers will add some offense by just returning to his career norm (that is about a 100 wRC+ or average). Azocar faded badly in the past few weeks and could see Myers taking some ABs from Hosmer who is in the midst of a bad slump. Since I am also down on Voit’s efforts … Myers maybe an upgrade there too.
I am not hopeful of a major trade for OF help. The more I hear from national media types the higher profile / longer term control types may not even get to the trade market leaving a very limited pool to try to acquire with a number of teams trying to be buyers … price goes up. Thinking more a 2021 trade deadline silence.
Still don’t want to deal any of the Padres top prospects for what will be on the market … rentals or less than impact gambles. Not sure what the Padres’ second tier prospects would get in a competitive market.
Best shot may be dealing a SP (Snell?) to a contender in a 3 way deal with prospects gong to a 3rd team and the 3rd team sending a bat to SD.
Part of that last point is that if Castillo, Pomeranz, Johnson, Suarez, and Morejon are all returning by the trade deadline (3 are LHP) something has to give out of the 13 arms on the active roster.

Yeh, think you are over-estimating what TOR would give for Snell (and his full contract) even though I agree they need another SP. Also, probably not really interested in Kohlway or Ornelas at this point … would be more receptive to another controllable pitcher.
Jansen can’t hit and if the Padres are looking for more offense … he is not the answer.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 3, 2022, 9:02 amAfter looking at Kim's splits I wonder if Tatis could end up in a platoon of sorts with both Kim and Grisham. Kim has been great against lefties and bad against righties. He's got a .286/.417/.442 line with a better than 2:1 BB to K ratio against lefties. Against righties he's at .201/.265/.296 and is striking out more than 4 times as often as he draws a walk.
If Tatis can handle CF maybe he ends up at SS against righties and in CF against lefties. He still gets to be the primary SS while helping us out put out a much stronger lineup.
