Machado and Abrams will still be around through 2028, so that could be 6 elite players in that 2025-28 window. Merrill (2025-6) is a potential replacement of Cronenworth who is only under control through 2025 (and will be in his 30s). So maybe 7 elite. Extend Cronenworth for 1B … 8 elite. OK a bit optimistic but can dream.

Every team will have holes … even in the optimistic scenario will be looking for catchers and pitchers. Hope for the draft / international signings.

I am willing to throw in Hassell in a deal for a Hays or Reynolds (try to do it with Mears but I can see Orioles asking for Hassell (top 30ish type spec in MLB) as part of those deals .. in the OF Wood is the one I am not willing to move...

With that said Hassell only moves on 2 1/2 ++ controlled guys... not for 2 month rentals and not for 1 1/2 control guys like Happ..  I would do anyone not in our top 5 ..even 2 *non top 5* in a deal for Happ or Santander

P Ricky Tiedemann #91 is who I was referring to....

SNELL + KOWHLEY + ORNELAS type for Jansen + Tiedemann

Tiedemann would slide to #5 in our top 30 with Woods dropping to #6 (MLB #100) giving us 6 top 100.. with Merrill just needing a healthy 2nd half to make it 7..

Not sure dreaming on CY Snell (a real need in Toronto SP) gets us those 2 .. but I'd try..Snell needs one more start like his last 2 (yes he was outstanding vs Phillies before hitting Harper) to peek his current value in the trade market... Tiedemann gives us a Top arm prospect to pair and dream on with Susana

My guess as to why Castillo has not been brought up (other than not being on the 40 man) is that the Padres are still trying to get him conditioned to pitch back to back games / multiple games in a short span. Getting close I think. Can’t really afford to have a RP available on a limited basis.

Myers is now taking batting practice and Melvin does not think it will take long (if his knee holds up) long to be back. I probably have more hope that Myers will add some offense by just returning to his career norm (that is about a 100 wRC+ or average). Azocar faded badly in the past few weeks and could see Myers taking some ABs from Hosmer who is in the midst of a bad slump. Since I am also down on Voit’s efforts … Myers maybe an upgrade there too.

I am not hopeful of a major trade for OF help. The more I hear from national media types the higher profile / longer term control types may not even get to the trade market leaving a very limited pool to try to acquire with a number of teams trying to be buyers … price goes up. Thinking more a 2021 trade deadline silence.

Still don’t want to deal any of the Padres top prospects for what will be on the market … rentals or less than impact gambles. Not sure what the Padres’ second tier prospects would get in a competitive market.

Best shot may be dealing a SP (Snell?) to a contender in a 3 way deal with prospects gong to a 3rd team and the 3rd team sending a bat to SD.

Part of that last point is that if Castillo, Pomeranz, Johnson, Suarez, and Morejon are all returning by the trade deadline (3 are LHP) something has to give out of the 13 arms on the active roster.

Yeh, think you are over-estimating what TOR would give for Snell (and his full contract) even though I agree they need another SP. Also, probably not really interested in Kohlway or Ornelas at this point … would be more receptive to another controllable pitcher.

Jansen can’t hit and if the Padres are looking for more offense … he is not the answer.
