2022 Season
Quote from LynchMob on June 17, 2022, 12:51 pmQuote from Henry Silvestre on June 17, 2022, 9:36 amMakes a ton of sense as even more Bats Hassell/Wood/Mears and Merrill 3 CF/OF types and a SS/INF.. will be ready or just about by 2024....
Remember BAEZ.. Wethers.. Reiss K... and those 2 -3 guys in SA that look terrific... as well...
We all want all of these guys to develop and produce for the Padres ... and ...
I think the reality for Wood/Mears/Weathers/Knehr is that they are all LOOOONG shots ...
For example ... I'd bet $1 in heart beat that NONE of those 4 guys will EVER have an MLB season with 1.0 WAR or greater ... I might even take the bet at 0.5 WAR ... maybe even 0.1 WAR ... I hope I'm wrong ...

I stand corrected
Under the terms of the 2022-26 Collective Bargaining Agreement, if MLB and the MLB Players Association agree to the implementation of an International Draft by July 25, 2022, the qualifying offer system will be eliminated starting with the 2022-23 offseason.
I am hoping against the International Draft.
Anyone else?
For one Preller seems to accel at the current process....we seem to be doing fine as is.
Also,If they institute the Draft next season we will lose out on Ethan Salas.
BTW this is a quote from one top Scout:
"We all wanted him,” he said. “He’s the best international catching prospect I’ve seen since (Jorge) Alfaro. That was, what, a decade ago?”"

If Salas is eligible to sign this year we may be OK.
I was under the impression he was still too young and was a 2023 signee and we could possibly lose him to the Draft?
Anyone know for certain so I can put my mind at ease?

I am not at all caught up on the new CBA.. I read somewhere that the International Draft starts July 23rd 2022???? One week after the 2017 MLB draft but I am not even sure...

Quote from fenn68 on June 17, 2022, 2:51 pmThe entire subject of the International Draft, which was temporarily tabled when the new Collective Bargaining Agreement was ratified in March, remains open for discussion until July 25.
By that date, a final decision must be made. If MLB and the MLBPA agree to implement an International Draft, beginning with the 2024 signing period, then the current free-agent Draft-pick compensation system (which includes the qualifying offer) would be abolished, beginning with the 2022-23 offseason.
So, we wait until late July to know the rules. Agree and the draft is in 2024 and the QO process is ended for this winter. Not agree and no draft and the QO remains in place for this winter.
Owners want the draft (more orderly distribution of talent ... and save money probably) ... Players want to eliminate draft pick compensation for QO players which restricts the free flow to FA signing for some. However, the players don't like the international draft (or any draft) that restricts freedom of players and the owners want to compensate teams for losing top talent to help balance the talent distribution.
Not sure of the subtleties of the detail of each proposal but if I were the players union ... give the owners the draft and clear out any restrictions to free current player movement (and higher pay likely). Guessing the owners are not giving as much as implied.

Quote from fenn68 on June 18, 2022, 8:42 amIf as reported MLB teams have to return to a 13 pitcher / 13 position player mix on Monday ... curious what the Padres do.
Currently they have 14 pitchers active ... likely Knehr will be sent down (he was just activated to cover Musgrove on the COVID-IL).
Who do they add as a position player? Roster has Campusano, Sullivan, Rosario, Abrams, and Rooker to choose from unless they go non-roster (and move someone off the 40 man)?
Then soon afterwards Musgrove returns and another pitcher needs to be optioned / IL / released / traded. Wilson optioned? That should buy time until the trade deadline with call-up in the minors since it does not appear that any of the other IL names are returning near term.
So, who is the position player added on (by) Monday? Could this timeline move Preller to make a position player deal (maybe more a bench upgrade type) now?

So if the Int Draft won’t be implemented until the 24’ signing period than Ethan Sals is a Padre no matter what…if I’m understanding this correctly.
He’s a generational talent so I’m just trying to be sure so I can stop worrying about it…😉

And soon Castillo (no 40)..Baez.. Pomz Johnson and Adams will be ready to join the SD Padres...between 60 day/40 man and 26 (13/13) lots of decisions
My guess is Rooker up.. he has been 2x's but didn't play..platoon with Mazara in RF..Azocar late inning Defensive replacement/backup CF....
I would offer Cubs a Campusano + Rosario + Lamet + Hill (the last 2 have 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 yrs of control and their combined $$ towards lux cap matches in this trade) for Ian Happ (1 1/2 control)... too much/not enough/just right?
Cubs get 2 P to help them get through 2022 ..I mean their BP is taxed to the max having pitched way more innings then the SP..not good..they get an offensive minded C who can assume Contreras role as DH/C with Gomes #1 C...and Rosario is a very nice prospect who is almost ready for Chicago.. in San Diego there is no room for him with Tatis/CJ/Crone/Kim now...and Merrill A ball down the line all Blocking his path...
Happ serves as insurance for 2023 in case we lose all out OFers to FA (except Grish).. is a Swiss knife and can spell Manny/Crone/Profar/Mazara/Grisham anytime and be a "regular" in the lineup but perhaps not at one set position (think Forsythe type role).. his OPS and Power stick complements our needs nicely and is a Huge upgrade in the OF/DH group..

Always worry … never underestimate the ability for some other team to sneak into the signing.

Guessing that would work for the CUBS … assuming they see Campusano as the prospect we think he is … the money push fits for both. They could also see dealing the others at some point for additional prospects. Just don’t know what other teams may be interested in Happ (and for what price).
Guessing that could work for the Padres … assuming they don’t see Campusano as the prospect we think he is. If they do see Campusano as an elite catching prospect … might see the potential for a better return from some other team seeking a catching upgrade. Elite hitting catchers are rare commodities … and six years’ control at low cost has a lot of value (probably more than Happ).
So probably boils down to the comparative evaluations of Campusano … Happ is likely a “known” commodity as a plus hitter who strikes out a lot and a below average fielder.
