2021 Season

PreviousPage 8 of 114Next

Analytics say that the third batter should actually be your 5th best hitter, so there’s argument to push Hosmer 3 and Machado 4. Reason being, 3rd hitter has the highest probability of coming up to the plate no on two out whereas cleanup has the highest chance to have a runner on base. You typically want your best hitter nowadays #2 to give him the most amount of at bats with guys in front of him. With no DH pitcher hitting 8 with Tatis at 2 makes sense.

Considering the Dodgers have won 8 straight NL West Division titles...which would you prefer for the 2021 Padres?

A.Win Division but lose in first round of Playoffs.

B.Win Wild Card,Beat Dodgers in NLDS but lose in the NLCS?

B .... making it to the NLCS a better goal only made better by doing so by elimination the LAD.

It may be nice to beat out the LAD to win the NL West but that satisfaction will instantly switch to frustration if the Padres flame out in the first round and watch the LAD move on to the WS.

While true that also gives the Dodgers now NINE Division titles in a row.

Ugh.

The problem with your either / or questions is that you assume the Padres MAKE the post season....I just hope they win the game they are playing on any given day....can't worry about the Dodgers and winning NINE in a row but a question I would ask instead is this........Which team has more pressure on them ?

The Defending World Series Champions who signed the FA Pitcher of the off season and eight time NL West Champions or the upstart Padres who had all of baseball wondering what they were going to do next as AJ Preller retooled and reloaded this team to take on the Dodgers and a 162 game schedule... ?

Expectations are high in both Los Angeles and San Diego.....every game these two teams play against each other this year will have that strange vibe that only comes with post season baseball and we get to see them go at each other..... what....17 times this year ?

Almost time to kick the tires and light the fires

I wasn't really looking for this, but I was looking at some of the elite Farm systems like Rays... and Mariners.

The M's have the top 2 OF prospects in the game in Kelenic & J. Rodriguez, PLUS (at #100 MLB) Taylor Trammell at #5.

But that's not all.  They also have:  25 y.o. Jake Fraley at #9 who is CF capable, 22 y.o. Zach DeLoach who is CF "possible"....

... and 27 y.o. Braden Bishop at #18 ...who is a RH elite defensive CF.   65 Field & Run,  55 Arm,  50 Hit,  35 Power : 45 Overall.

I propose a straight up trade of Jorge Mateo for Bishop.  Bishop has been slowed down by injuries.  Power limitations even for CF project him to 4th OF.  BUT he has one option left.  Mateo:  80 Run, 55 Arm?,  45-50 Field, 45-50 Power, 40 Hit (my grades) = 40 Overall.  "Only" 25 y.o, but out of options.

Each guy just "fits" the other team better:  M's lack middle INF options we're overflowing with, so Mateo could be a "poor man's Profar" there.  He fits better on an AL/DH roster with less subs, and might develop into more than a PR with some playing time they could afford him in both INF & OF.  Bishop fits the Pads EXACT need I'm obsessed with (b/c it's literally the only "need" left) for a TRUE defensive CF backup to Grisham who if not on 26-man can be stashed in AAA.

M’s might prefer Javy Guerra, and personally I wouldn’t say no even straight up.  Or even both guys for Bishop + another (non 40 man) prospect.   Use Bishop as a band aid to help get to Hassell or Abrams in a few years.

It wasn't about just assuming we would make the playoffs.

What Padre fan no matter how optimistic would ever just "assume" we will be in the playoffs.

I was just thinking anything short of a World Series Championship which scenario would Padre fans rather have happen.

I would have to think that in order for this season to be considered a "success", making the NLCS is the minimum. With all the SP we have added, and the fact that we lost the NLDS to the LAD season with no SP, that is a fair assessment of what the season's goal should be.

That’s where the thought comes from.

Because to me winning the Division and knocking the Dodgers down a notch after 8 straight titles would be a good start for me.

That also means we don’t have to play a 1 game series to continue on.

Which reminds me..... no “playoff” series (any game after 162) should only be one game,

Minimum of 2 out of 3 IMO.

Who agreed to a 1 game play in for the Wild Card to begin with and why?

Dumb as far as I’m concerned,

Couldn't agree more.   MLB has BY FAR the 2 dumbest things in any pro sport.  #1 (by a mile) WAS the All Star game determining Home Field advantage for World Series.... instead of team record over 162 games.  So ludicrous it's hard to know where to start.  Rightfully got rid of it.  #2 (also by a mile) is the 1 game Wild Card.  SOOOOO Dumb.  Hopefully they'll come up with a modified playoff this season & then get rid of it for good in next CBA.  A 1 game playoff for a Wildcard (or division) tie?  I've got no problem with that.
