One of the most important Series of the season…..and we have Velazquez/Darvish/Arrieta going.
Stranger things have happened but my confidence level could be higher.

Fortunately … maybe … STL has Mikolas and Happ in two of the starts and they have been ineffective in 2021.

Just as I suspected.

Mikolas gonna shut us out.

You have to wonder if Preller tries to nab Arihara just recently DFA'd from TEX. You could drop Arrieta who was just injured again for the roster spot. With Arrieta, Snell, and Paddack out for the balance of the season, will need some more arms, not to compete, but to simply complete the season without blowing out whats remaining of the bullpen.

Then fire Tingler, bring back Bochy, Balsley, and maybe Flannery, and start fresh in 2022.

No surprise that Arrieta got DFA BUT

the removal of Guerra from the 60 day IL and add to the 28 man roster was .... yes, he is out of minor league options but the surprise is he came off the 60 day IL after the minor league season ended.

Not sure why they had to make that move considering both Ona and Wingenter were on rehabs sooner then at some point went into the witness protection program.

Of the three, Guerra has the tantalizing skills to dream on so this is his last/final audition to see if he stays on the 40 man.  It was previously announced in the transactions list that he was headed to El Paso, but apparently he was impressive enough in his short minor league rehab to not "disappear" but be activated from the 60 IL.  I'm pulling for him - need a feel good story after a disappointing season.

No fairy-tale ending.  Still got hit hard.  May get into a few more games but writing may be on the wall.

2022 will not be a year to still count on reclamation projects.

If Guerra is still here he will have to be lights out in the Spring.

We need 26 contributors next year....we don't have the luxury of having any top prospects "on the brink" unless you count

Gore and Campusano.Obviously they still have question marks...especially Gore.

We could possibly get contribution later next year from Abrams.....but that's about it from the Farm for 22'.

I would think the 26 man opening day roster needs to be supported by at least 5 - 10 players on the 40 man that they can call up (injury coverage / worn out pen / etc.) and contribute at a basic ML level if they want to compete for the full season.

If that is the view … somewhat limits the number of prospects not ML ready to protect from the Rule 5 process. Sure Gore and very probably Valenzuela are locks. High chance Martinez and Wilson … except for Valenzuela, all could contribute in 2022. After that it becomes a debate vs. the likes of Altavilla, Guerra, Diaz out of option types who may (or may not make the 26 man roster cut out of ST.

Not expecting Guerra to make the 40 man … but a good chance as other teams also glut the market with DFA at the cutdown day, he will not get claimed and the Padres could resign him if they want. (PS … just have not been impressed by Guerra despite his reported velocity and movement … has been very hittable).

On the fringe making the call between an out of option type would could help but only has a 10% change to make the 26 man vs a prospect with 0% change in 2022 but a future (maybe) if not lost via Rule 5 … is a tough call.

Given the injury profile of the Padres arms … might see the winter 40 man biased to keep arms over position players even if some of those arms will get DFA after ST.

Pretty sure we will see some head scratching calls as the 40 man is set.

I did see that Abrams is going to the instructs … no idea how healthy or whether he will be actively participating in field activities. However, it is a good sign that his recovery is on track for him to be a full participant in ST.

I actually expect Abrams (non-roster this winter) given his elite prospect profile and the shortage of position players post Pham and probably with the DH to be playing for the Padres at some point in 2022. One key injury away if they use him either in the INF or the OF.

Remember Tatis spent a 1/2 season in AA … got injured … then was a starter for the Padres the following season (albeit on a very bad team). So, Abrams … not out of the question.
