2019 Spring Training Thread

Watched yesterday's game on FSSD ... (the MILW feed). Some random observations:

1. Mejia seems small for a catcher BUT the praise for his throwing arm is justified as he fired some real bullets to 2B and 1B. Quick bat. Can see why he was touted as a top prospect.

2. Tatis is justifiably getting recognition for the line shot HR but he did also look quite good in the field ... head in the game.

3. France looked solid at 3B and at bat.

4. Naylor looked poor in LF ... especially on a fly over his head.

5. Paddack maybe impressed me the most ... although clearly was not throwing his full array he showed excellent command with his FB against 1st team Brewers (4K in 2 innings) plus stayed calm in the 2nd after some defensive lapses set up the run against him. Add his pace and easy motion make him a pleasure to watch. We will see later how his secondary pitches work when they are needed in longer outings when game mean something .... but for now I can see the reason for optimism.

Side note: the Brewers' broadcaster did several times praise the Padres farms system and the Padres future (not really something they had to do on a MILW feed) plus (maybe not justified) suggest the Padres in 2019 had a good team and could contend. Valid or not ... shows some good image being developed by the Padres.

Is Aderlin Rodriguez the new Jabari Blash?

If you mean a guy who's barely a fringe big-leaguer who Padres fans are likely to get irrationally excited about... sure.

That's exactly what I mean.

Dude will probably hit 8 or 9 HR's in the spring and fans will wonder why he doesn't make the team.

John Roskos anyone?

John Roskos anyone?

I was thinking the exact same thing😁

He never did make the team out of camp, did he?

Padres signed RHP Chris Rowley to a minor league contract.

So Sid Vicious looked good on the mound today, Renfroe had some good at bats, and I liked Corderos second at bat against Pomeranz scoring two runs, before getting thrown out trying to stretch into a double.

What are the chances Mejia opens the season in AAA?

At this point, I'd say even money.
