2019 Spring Training Thread

PreviousPage 11 of 18Next

About 10 days until they break camp and 14 days until opening day (2 exhibition games in Seattle and an off day).

So, we should see some focusing on options for the final 25 man spots. Sort of seeing the real only position player debate is 2 of Renfroe - Reyes - Pirela (assumes Tatis is sent down). Pirela's "advantage" is that he provides both INF and OF versatility as the 25th man.

The real call is the 13 man pitching staff. The 5th SP may have impact on the pen. IF they go with Strahm, Lucchesi, Lauer, and Paddack then X. Allen, Nix, and Mitchell have not looked that good and they have already relegated Perdomo to a relief role. IF Preller sticks to the theme of giving that slot to the best option for winning now ... maybe they go with Erlin (also not effective this spring but a stronger ML record). However, what does that to LH RP to start the season.  Loup yes but after that Wieck has not worked in "A" games recovering. Do they go with only 1 LHRP or do they add one of the LHRP in camp (they have the Jankowski to 60 day IL move for room).

They did sign Solis who was active in WASH's camp and likely in shape ... poor 2017-18 after a good 2016 ... possible? A wild card is Enns (27) who is a NRI and been pitching well in camp. Was a very effective MiL SP prior to 2018 (when he was not) but not a big FB type rather relying on a variety of pitches and command. Just might sneak in over some other LHP options to start the season.

Something to watch over the next 10 days.

Are we sure Perdomo even makes the opening day bullpen?

I just see no reason to be honest.

Time to cut him loose.....

If in the next two weeks there are about 4-5 major injuries to pitchers and Perdomo has a string of exceptional showings ... maybe a 2% chance.

He surely is heading to the DFA list sooner than later ... but not until they need the 40 man roster space and that is probably not at the end of ST. Jankowski to the 60 day and probably Mitchell's DFA goes earlier. However, hard to see Perdomo not getting DFA'd by July.

Til then .... see if his sinker plays as a RP in AAA.

If any of you see the game tonight vs LAA, it looks like they are limiting the number of changes Paddock can throw in this game. He is throwing CB (with poor results) almost as much as the change. Am I missing?

Great quote from the Pres of Operations from the Reds today, regarding their off season.

“For the first time in a long time we added multiple well-known major league players to this team in an offseason,” president of baseball operations Dick Williams tells Sherman. “That clearly has people’s imaginations going.

Can't help but think of padres 2015 season and that Cincy's season will crash and burn also. Kemp is BAD and still no pitching

Would expect that since this is ST they want Paddack to work his curve in game situations for development purposes. Doubt they have any concern about his FB/CH command. Once the season starts, expect to pitch sequence  to be different and feature the change more with the curve be the 3rd pitch to keep the hitters off balance.

I did watch last night game ... if that was poor results I will take it .... 1 run over 4 innings and Paddack shown his command (zero walks) with 6 Ks. That while working on his curveball.

For a guy that only has 7 starts above A ball (in AA) ... his pace, command, and results are impressive and clearly make him one of the best SP candidates we have seen recently. It will be interesting to see how ML hitters adjust once they see him in ML games ...

So click on Miserble Padre Fans live twitter feed lower right of page if you wanna see the back field action this morning.

Gore,Morejon and Baez all going at the same time on different fields and let’s just say there wasn’t much hitting going on!

And the 1 run came  off a bloop double by the best hitter in the game,a Sac fly and a single.

I agree that his outing overall was good. Just referring to the CB that start. Had very little break and it did seem loopy to me. It was better two starts back. Not an MLB pitch yet.

With minor league games officially beginning tomorrow, expect tomorrow morning to be moving day for a bunch of guys still on the big league side. Would guess they'll get down to about 40 on the big league side.
