2018 MLB DRAFT
Quote from fenn68 on May 11, 2018, 12:13 pmJune 4th is just over 3 weeks away and the first day of the 2018 MLB DRAFT.
Most reports suggest that this draft is deep but not elite at the top. Also, a sense the college players will go quickly and dominate the first 10 picks (Padres #7 as I recall).
Any insight on the Padres' potential selections?
If the first six picks follow the safe college theme ... that may suit Preller just fine and allow him to have the pick of the higher upside HS options (and take the greater risk). Apparently there are some high upside HS pitchers the Padres are tracking.
So best player available ... higher upside .... can never have enough pitching given the realities of injuries plus they are (or may be) better trade chips (or the players they eventually bump).

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 11, 2018, 2:05 pmI hope we bend towards offense in this draft but completely understand if they have a pitcher rated high and available...... take him.
It is just getting so frustrating having a weak offensive team.
We haven't had a great offense in 20 years and rarely ever even have a "good" one.
Of course drafting more position players guarantees nothing....but I guess I'm just tired of being a
pitching only team.
These no hitters and near no hitters recently aren't helping.

I get the sense there are NO college impact bats in this draft unless someone exceeds expectations. When you consider MLBPipeline has as their #1 college position player (#3 overall) Nick Madrigal ... a 5'7" / 160 lb, 2B with "40" power ... maybe very good but not what most would consider game changing impact player. Those who follow can't be better. Even their #2 college position player (#7 overall) Swaggerty ... 5'11" / 180 lb, OF with only "50" power would be a stretch to be considered a game changer. The college power bats come a bit later but also come with some other drawback ... hence behind the top two.
If the "best player available" is a HS bat (could be) Padres could go that way (potential impact / high risk) with MLB #10 a HS OF name Kelenic (but some project him in a corner with little game changing power .... impact?) or #17 HS 3B Gorman (has "60" power but pretty much average the rest of the way). Just not seeing that impact bat HS or College ... good maybe but not impact.
Sort of settles me at HS pitcher with upside to maximize the value of that first round pick ... and apparently there will a a few sitting at #7 if the college guys earlier.

Quote from David Jay on May 11, 2018, 5:08 pmAlec Bohm is a legit offensive force third baseman. But there's no chance he's available to the Padres.
We'll tee up our interview with Mark Conner in the next week.

From what I read ... he can it with power but is a liability at 3B (6'4 / 240 listed) and may be suited to 1B / DH ... not a fit for the Padres but he may be there depending on the 6 teams ahead of them and their profile for a 1B/DH. #11 on MLB's list. He does not seem to fit the current Padres mold for pitching, SS, CF, C as a focus.
To that end, a lot of "helium" around the Flordia 3B Jonathon India ... the ratings are above average hitting and fielding and still with "50" power. #10 on MLB's list and may fit the Padres better.
#9 on MLB's list might intrigue the Padres ... Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart who can hit with power and has defense. Catchers are usually a pretty big risk early but the Padres like defense in a catcher ... and Hedges is trending downward with his bat ... plus the only near term catching prospect is Allen in AA with defensive concerns. Could be a fast mover and having more quality catching creates some good trade chips since catchers are seeming always in demand.
I still would bet on a HS pitcher BUT could use a lot more scouting input on both India and Bart before I brush them off. Since SD has a street already named after India ... seems like a fit.

Quote from TarheelPadre on May 12, 2018, 10:00 amIt doesn’t matter who they draft cause the organization won’t develop them anyways. For a team that supposedly has such a great farm system, we sure can’t develop a major league offensive star.

LOL.....you must have been talking to my wife....she says the same thing every year
"Draft them....give up on them and trade them for almost nothing and watch them develop for somebody else"
and she has been a Padre fan since 1980.....I been there from the old Westgate Park days
The only one we agree on that they kept was Tony

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 12, 2018, 4:02 pm"Impact bat" doesn't necessarily mean 30+ homers and prodigious power. I think Madrigal is going to be a really good player. Pedroia-esque. I would take a bunch of those guys on my team any day. This iteration of the Padres doesn't use their speed on the bases, which is a disservice. Villanueva faded as most expected, Pirela doesn't have an extra base hit in an eternity.....Frustrating.
