Key Statistics: 3B Pedro Reyes 2-for-4, 2 2B, R, BB, 3 RBI, SB (12); DH Will Wagner 2-for-5, 2B, R; SS Mason McCoy 2-for-3, 2 R, BB; RF Nick Schnell 3-for-4, HR (9), 2 R, 2 RBI, BB; LHP Marco Gonzales 3.2 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 5 K; RHP Logan Gillaspie (L, 2-4) 1.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2 K
Prospect Watch: El Paso had an early lead but lost on yet another implosion from the El Paso pitching staff. The Chihuahuas’ pitching staff has had a rough May. They’ve allowed 10 runs or more 10 times this month, with four of those games coming in Albuquerque. Overall, the El Paso pitching has an ERA of 6.67 this season, which ranks dead last in the PCL. … At the plate, veteran infielder Pablo Reyes continues to swing the bat well. The 32-year-old had a pair of doubles, a walk, and he also drove in three runs. Reyes has walked (28 times) more than he’s struck out (17) while getting on-base at a .442 clip. While there isn’t a clear path to a roster spot in San Diego, Reyes has seen big league time in each of the last five seasons. … Nick Schnell had three hits, including his ninth homer of the year. The former Rays prospect was drafted 32nd overall in 2018, out of high school in the Indianapolis area. He signed with the Padres as a free agent in the off-season, and he’s been productive with El Paso. Thus far, the left-handed hitting outfielder is strictly a platoon bat; he has a .958 OPS against righties and a paltry .472 OPS in 27 at-bats against southpaws. … Lefty starter Marco Gonzales was hit hard by the Isotopes, giving up six runs on 10 hits in just 3.2 innings. The veteran left-hander struck out five batters and didn’t issue a walk. El Paso and its division rival parks are an unforgiving place to pitch, but Gonzales has pitched poorly, even by PCL standards. He’s averaged just over three innings a start, and he’s allowed a staggering 63 hits in 33.2 innings. Opposing hitters are hitting .399 against him, and he has a WHIP north of two. Gonzales has pitched over 900 big league innings in parts of 10 big league seasons.

Key Statistics: The Missions scored five in the fourth inning to cruise to a win against the Hooks at home. … Ethan Salas had a single in four at-bats. Coming into play Friday, Salas ranked fourth in the league with a 6.4 swinging strike rate, and his 17.4% K-rate sat just outside the top-10. Salas has hit .300 in both April and May, showing remarkable consistency after a lost 2025. … Tirso Ornelas had a pair of hits, including a double which was San Antonio’s only extra-base hit of the night. After a slow start in April, Ornelas has swung the bat well in May. The 26-year-old is hitting .306/.376/.482 with nine doubles and a pair of homers. Ornelas has been remarkably consistent in the discipline category, as his nine percent walk rate and 17% K-rate are in line with his career norms. After elevating the ball well through the first month, his fly ball rate has regressed to a 30.4% rate. … Braedon Karpathios singled and drew three walks, as the 23-year-old continues to enjoy a productive May. The Missions outfielder is hitting .277/.382/.422 with three homers and 15 walks. While the production is encouraging, the left-hander continues to strike out prolifically. He recently ended a stretch in which he struck out at least once in 13 consecutive games, and he’s punched out 30 times in just under 100 plate appearances in May. Overall, his 33.5% K-rate is the eighth-highest in the circuit. … Righty Jhony Brito continued his rehab assignment with a stellar outing. The right-hander needed just 52 pitches to complete six shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 2.03 in three outings since joining the Missions. He allowed one hit and struck out four without issuing a walk, lowering his WHIP to 1.05. Brito started his rehab assignment on May 7 and should get one more tuneup outing before the Padres have to decide whether to activate him from the injured list. He does have one minor league option remaining.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps had a comeback win for the ages on Friday. South Bend jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, only to see Fort Wayne mount a furious comeback. The TinCaps scored four in the ninth to earn the victory. … It was a strange evening, as Kash Mayfield, who had not allowed more than three hits in a start this year, endured a brutal outing Friday. In this one, Mayfield recorded just one out and was charged with six runs – three of which crossed the plate after he was removed at 32 pitches. Mayfield had poor command, walking two and hitting a batter as he landed just 17 strikes. His ERA rose from 1.30 to 2.83, thanks to the poor start. … At the plate, Kasen Wells had four hits, including a single in the ninth inning that gave Fort Wayne the win. He also made a diving catch in center field earlier in the game, taking away a hit. The speedy center fielder has pushed his on-base percentage this year up to .400. … Alex McCoy had two hits, including his 10th homer of the year. The 24-year-old outfielder went through a slump early in May, but he has come on in the last two weeks. He’s hit safely in eight of the last nine games, and he’s connected on five homers this month. McCoy is tied with teammate Jake Cunningham (among many others) for second in the Midwest League in homers. … Sidewinding reliever Clay Edmondson earned the victory after holding the Cubs scoreless for two innings. The 22-year-old allowed a hit, a walk, and struck out three. Edmondson has been incredible for the TInCaps this season. He’s allowed just nine hits in 21 innings, and has a sparkling 0.43 ERA with a Midwest League-best 10 saves. The UNC-Asheville product is a tough look with a low-90s heater that explodes on opposing batters.
Inland Empire 66ers 3, Storm 1
Key Statistics: CF Ryan Wideman 1-for-4, RBI; DH Yoiber Ocopio 1-for-4, 2B; 1B Kerrington Cross 1-for-4, 2B; LHP Kruz Schoolcraft (L, 0-2) 3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K; RHP Vicarte Domingo 2.1 IP, 4 H, BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm offense struggled Friday as they lost in front of a crowd of 4,000 at The Diamond. … Center fielder Ryan Wideman went 1-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, extending his hitting streak to five games. Wideman struggled last week against Visalia, but he’s 8-for-19 with a double and a homer in the series against Inland Empire. Overall, he is hitting .308/.373/.487. … Lefty Kruz Schoolcraft set a new career-high with nine strikeouts, but he once again struggled to keep runners off the bases. Last year’s first-round pick surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks in just 3.2 innings. Schoolcraft has had flashes of success this month and his fastball continues to sit in the mid-90s, but he hasn’t put everything together to truly dominate a start yet. Encouragingly, he struck out 25 batters in 17.1innings and opposing batters hit just .226 against him in May – way down from a .500 clip in April. Schoolcraft’s command has still remained spotty, as evidenced by the 14 walks he’s issued this month. Despite the free passes, there are still some things for Schoolcraft to build on as he enters June. … Vicarte Domingo pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits. He walked one and struck out three. The 23-year-old reliever started the year in Fort Wayne but was moved back to the Cal League after some early-season struggles. He’s been better in his second stint with the Storm. He has not allowed a run in six of eight appearances this month.
ACL Rangers 6, ACL Padres 5

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres lost when the Rangers walloped rehabbing pitcher Landry Jurecka for five runs in the eighth inning. … Center fielder Moises Valdez doubled, singled, and swiped a base out of the leadoff spot. The 21-year-old is getting his first taste of domestic baseball after spending the last three years in the DSL. Thus far, Valdez has looked strong, hitting .400/.424/.500 in nine games. … Blake Hunt homered for the second straight game, his only hit in four plate appearances. Hunt could be a candidate to join the El Paso roster next week as he works back into form from his oblique injury. … Righty Lan-Hong Su stretched out to three innings for the first time Friday, continuing to look strong as he allowed a run on four hits, without allowing a walk or registering a strikeout. The Taiwanese-born righty has given up just one run in seven innings in his first three appearances as a professional. He’s walked four and struck out eight. … Lefty Adler Cecil followed Su, and he tossed three scoreless frames, walking three and striking out six. Outside of one poor outing, the Temecula native has been sharp as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. In 11.1 innings, he’s walked seven and struck out a whopping 22 batters.
