Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas mounted a comeback after falling behind 5-0 in the first to the Dodgers’ Triple-A club, but ultimately dropped this one in extra innings. Eguy Rosario and Tirso Ornelas were a two-man wrecking crew for the El Paso offense. Rosario’s fifth-inning home run that got the club within one was his third hit, all coming against right-handed pitching. While Rosario has been especially effective against lefties over the last few years, the 24-year-old   has also been crushing right-handers to the tune of a .934 OPS. For good measure, his fourth and final hit of the night was a double off a southpaw. … Moments before Rosario’s double, Ornelas tied the game with his 15th home run. The left-handed hitting Ornelas has remarkably even splits on the season, posting a .944 OPS against righties and a .904 OPS against same-handed pitching. … Jhony Brito got the start as he returned to action for the first time in three weeks, but was unable to get out of the first inning. He gave way after 28 stressful pitches, although the numbers look worse than the actual performance. With one out, Brito induced back-to-back grounders to third, but one went for an error, and the other trickled off Matthew Batten‘s glove for a double. After that, the floodgates opened as Brito gave up another double and a pair of walks. The righty was sitting 95-97 with his fastballs. He’ll look to get stretched back out in the coming weeks. … Omar Cruz came on for Brito and struck out six over 3.2 innings as he racked up a 39% whiff rate. The lefty has 90 strikeouts in 61 innings this year with a 3.54 ERA with the Chihuahuas and Missions.

Prospect Watch: The Missions wasted another strong pitching performance by Victor Lizarraga, giving up 10 unanswered runs late in defeat. Lizarraga cruised through the first five innings, allowing just one unearned run on his own throwing error. Over his last two starts, Lizarraga given up seven hits and no earned runs while striking out 15 in 12 innings. With so many prospects having been traded away, Lizarraga is one of the top starting options in the system, and this start reinforces that. The 20-year-old has a 3.55 ERA on the season with 87 strikeouts in 83.2 innings. … For the first time since June 12, Francis Pena allowed an earned run. It broke up a streak of 15 straight scoreless innings in which he struck out 20 while allowing six hits. Pena came in with the bases loaded, one out, and struck out the next two batters.  Unfortunately, a wild pitch allowed a runner to reach base, and three two-out hits turned a 6-5 game into an 11-5 blowout.    Even allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings, Pena still has a 1.55 ERA in 46.1 innings this year.

West Michigan Whitecaps 6, TinCaps 5 (11 innings)

Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez IP, H, K; DH Ethan Salas 1-for-4, BB; RF Kai Murphy 1-for-1, 2 R, RBI, BB; 2B Nerwilian Cedeno 1-for-5, RBI, SB (6)

Prospect Watch: Jagger Haynes delivered another quality start as he makes his case as the top left-handed pitching prospect currently active in the system. It was the eighth time Haynes has gone at least six innings in 16 starts this season. Entering this season, the 21-year-old Haynes had thrown only 25.1 innings over three seasons in the Padres organization. Haynes is currently at 80 innings with another month left in the season. His command has been inconsistent through the year and he hasn’t looked particularly sharp in his recent outings. Despite the good results, he walked four Wednesday and has issued 15 over his last 18 innings. Even worn down a bit, he is still averaging better than a strikeout in an inning.  As long as he is healthy, it will be a tremendous season for Haynes. … The TinCaps offense could only muster five singles on the day. While the offense looked lost, Kai Murphy was the spark plug to get them started. Murphy drew a walk as a pinch-hitter in the eighth then scored the game-tying run two batters later. In the 10th, he singled home a run before eventually coming around and scoring the game-tying run on a wild pitch. The son of Pat Murphy finishes July with a hit in five straight games.  During this stretch, he is 9-for-19 with a double, triple, home run, eight runs scored, and six RBI.

Fresno Grizzlies 5, Storm 2

Key Stats: SS Leodalis De Vries 0-for-3, 2 BB, R, PO/CS; 2B Rosman Verdugo 1-for-4, BB; DH Ethan Long 1-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Jose Luis Reyes (L, 4-7) 5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Yerry Landinez, 2 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm fell behind 5-0 early and couldn’t climb out of the hole.  Like the TinCaps, the Storm managed just five hits. Ethan Long had the big hit of the game.  A two-out, two-run double to give the Storm some life. The first baseman’s double was his eighth of the season and he is now hitting .273/.417/.406 with the Storm. … Long’s double-scored Leo De Vries, who had walked earlier in the inning.  While the hitless night snapped a seven-game hit streak, De Vries has now walked in three straight games.  He finishes July with an eye-popping .318/.442/.694 line. … Righty Jose Luis Reyes made the start and managed to give the Storm five innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. The righty has a 6.94 ERA this season.
