We just got Snell for Patiño Wilcox Hunt and Mejia!

I hate four for one trades but in this case I am good with this one......Moving Mejia is great....he had no position and was not a Catcher, Patino will be good but Snell already is, Wilcox may be the one that hurts long term....Think Fried and Hunt was behind Campusano so good move.

Rotation of Snell, Lamet, Davies, Paddack and Gore.......I like it with Morejon and Weathers right there

Nice move AJ

Hot Damn...Go Padres

A LHP with a mid-90's FB and 4-plus pitches who has become an ACE pitcher with a 3.24 lifetime ERA? Is it just me, or is Snell the perfect role model for Gore?

I have actually been a huge fan of Blake Snell for a few years now. So happy to see him join the team. Welcome to the Padres Blake!

Well we traded 6 years of control for Patino for three years of control for Snell. With the trading of two catchers, it seems obvious that AJ thinks that Campusano is the real deal and should be the back-up catcher next season, and Nola is under contract for a good while, so Meja and Hunt were expendable. Wilcox has a big upside, but you have to give up something to get something. Glad we still have Gore, Morejon, and Weathers. We will have quite a pitching staff in 2022. This should be the end of the trades. We have no one left to trade unless someone will take Myers' contract off of our hands.

Well....Wow!

We got our TOR LH starter!

Whatever you think of this deal and whether this brings us a Championship you can't deny this is a great time to be a Padre fan and AJ is fun if nothing else.

I'm very happy with this deal...I wanted a LH starter at the top of the rotation.

But it remains to be seen who wins this deal in the end....but we are going for it "now" and that's the right thing to do.

Patino and Wilcox could both be TOR starters for years to come....so we'll see.

I hope I am wrong about Snell ... but his career other than 2018 is not all the compelling.

2018: 31 starts .... 180 innings (5.8 per start) ... 1.89 ERA

But:

2017: 24 starts .... 129 innings (5.4 per start) ... 4.04 ERA

2019: 23 starts .... 107 innings (4.7 per start) ... 4.29 ERA

2020: 11 starts .... 50   innings (4.5 per start) ... 3.24 ERA

Just has not shown the profile of an "ace" other than 2018 .... doesn't have the results and does not pitch the innings. Worried about that downward innings per game since 2018 ... Padres are going to have to really bulk up the pen if Snell is only a 5 inning or less pitcher and have a ML arm in reserve to cover his missed starts.

Not overwhelmed with the add.

Just something to speculate on ....

Scott Boras is Snell's agent

Scott Boras has a good relationship Preller and has deep ties with Padre players and prospects

Wonder if Preller and Boras spoke during these negotiations and Boras (who seems persuasive) helped convince Preller to make this deal?

I get your trepidation when it comes to Snell. However, I think when you look at just stats, his progression is a little misleading. 2017 was his second season, and a small improvement over 2016. 2018, he made his breakout, won CY. 2019, was starting just as good, and then he broke is toe. IMO, and I recall some on XM Radio saying as well, that TAM should make sure they did not rush him back, since it was his landing foot, and I believe TAM did rush him back. With the foot not being quite right, it lead to a change in his delivery, which probably lead to the loose bodies in his, which were removed in July, and I think he then missed another 4 weeks. And while he wasnt at 2018 levels in 2020, he was still really, really good.

Also, I think SD and TAM have a different philosophy when it comes to innings, training, and other items. I recall Greg Maddox saying SD has some of the best trainers he had ever worked with, and his arm felt better in years when he was in SD.

So, I suggest looking on the bright side, and look forward to a healthy rotation of Lamet, Snell, Davies, Paddack, and our pick from prospects for #5.

Yeh, not locked into Snell good or Snell bad .. just not a clear call and hopefully the Padres scouting has done its due diligence.

TB never makes this easy with the way they handle pitchers ... love their RP and freely yank the SP and keep them pitching short stints. Padres on the other hand seem to want their SP to push 6 innings per start ... who is the real Blake Snell? No idea.

Did see a comment that Pham lobbied for the Padres to acquire Snell and also heard a TB reporter suggest that Snell is a very approachable player. I guess that is a good endorsement for him as an individual and that may fit the Padres clubhouse and marketing base with the fans.

Well for SD sake, lets hope its closer to the 2018 and 2020 version with the ability to go 6 per start.

The Padres will only be paying Blake Snell $1 mil more than the Braves just gave Drew Smyly!
