Trade Deadline

As it stands here early in May.. what is your take on what's needed to get this team the best WS chances?

Catcher is usually not something teams trade for at the deadline BUT I think is critical for the SDP to find a solution.

Even with Nola contributing to last night's win, he simply is not good enough behind the plate to carry his current production .158 BA and .422 OPS.. Campy (for his career) has spent more time on the IL than on the playing field..and Sullivan who looks like he belongs on a MLB roster is best off the bench every 3rd day or so.. Severino is smashing balls in AAA and drawing BBs (4 last night) but like Sullivan maybe best as a backup as well..

So who fits best with our team

Salvador Perez.. Best fit, controlled, Latin, coach like figure in dugout.. But unlikely available.. Again "unlikely" and AJ Preller don't mix, and if he thinks that's the piece, we all know he will get it (KC is out of contention so could accelerate their rebuild with an influx of youth)

Yan Gomes (Cubs) a very solid, very good C with well above avg offense (silver slugger), Cubs are beginning to sink and if they fall out would the 35 yr Old C (Team option $6mil for 2024) be the right guy to bring to SD? ..Yes, C is a very small fraternity as far as available ones, Gomes would be heaven sent..He is 💯 better than Nola and would cost (arb for Nola) roughly the same for 2024..

Not sure I would roll the dice or pay the steep price on others (Yasmani(fit/age/$$/injuries)/Stepehenson(trade cost) who could be available.. Or Contreras ($$ commitment too much, and ? Catching/Pitching chemistry)

I won't address all needs.. But as of now, to me C is a dark black hole with Nola as our #1

As I see it C/BP +1 high leverage/SP (only ACE like or upper #2 type)/and bench upgrade (preferably IF).. are the 4 areas (that I ID ) as needs for Padres 2023..

What are yours? Who do you think makes us >? Have at it

Catcher....Bullpen...Starting Pitching (if we have an injury before the deadline).

The Tigers may have a goldmine in Eduardo Rodriguez.

Having his best season to date and is controlled through 2024 I believe.

While he isn't cheap they may still be able to get a good haul for him at this years deadline.

Jordan Montgomery is another starter (if the Cards don't turn things around) who could be available.

Free agent at the end of this season so shouldn't cost too much...having a decent start to the season.

Hopefully we are NOT in the market for a starter at all...but if we are hopefully it will be a guy like Rodriguez who can also take Snells spot in 2024.

I would be concerned with Eduardo Rodriguez, why is a 30 year old career 4.05 ERA suddenly pitching to a 1.81 ERA. Doesnt seem like a solid bet to me.

Catching, I dont know if anybody would be worth the trade costs. Gomes is having a career year, and looks to be taking advantage of Wrigley and one really good game.....versus SD by the way. Stephenson is definitely a no go, a product of hitting in CIN for 81 games, his bat would die in SD and the NL West parks. All the others mentioned are a lot of salary dollars.

We need another INF like we I need a hole in my head.

I agree with a Jim Bowden prediction (IIRC) that Prellers big get this trade deadline will be Corbin Burnes. Providing that MIL falters like last season.

The rest of our perceived issues is simply lack of performance. That lies on Melvin to fix. If he cant, then maybe he is the midseason fix is firing him.

Well he pitched in Fenway and in the AL East his entire career for one thing....4.05 era in that Park and Division is pretty good.

Probably why Detroit signed him to his current deal.

Rodriguez can opt out after next season...and at $18mil/$16m/$15m the next three years he may be worth it.

Just an example...I'm not beating my chest for him by any means.

I think there's somewhere close to 70 games left until the deadline. A lot can change internally and externally in that amount of time. I would say a front line starter feels like it would make the most impact though. Trading for a catcher in season is always a risk and Sullivan and Campusano have a chance to improve the situation. There's still a chance guys like Suarez, Castillo and Pomeranz can get healthy and help the bullpen. Lugo is unlikely to make it the whole season as a starter. Getting someone who could be a part of the playoff rotation could be big. I also feel like I say this every year, but I would love to get a versatile platoon type bat for the bench.

I am inclined to NOT make a major trade (baring a major injury). First, not all that much to deal to get a MAJOR addition and skeptical about who may be available who could be consider a MAJOR upgrade.

However, could see one or two MINOR adds ... specifically to upgrade over Odor and Engel who are real light weight bench pieces now ... and not really anything impressive in AAA to bump them. Maybe Azocar over Engel but still could shot for someone more established off the bench.

Looking at a "rental" of an experience veteran for the bench upgrade at that should cost very little in the way of minor league talent..

I will rethink this in 2 1/2 months.
