TOM COSGROVE
Quote from fenn68 on June 3, 2023, 8:38 amHeard an interview with Cosgrove yesterday that set the seeds for some optimistic future projections.
Yes, in the ML we are on a very small sample size and the league does not know him … so not sure when (if) reality will set in.
However, in the interview Cosgrove a mid-20s college type draftee who has been around for a few years with OK stuff / success said that two years ago he changed his delivery for an overhand / curve profile to a lower slot / slider profile and as a result his effectiveness has jumped up … and so far in the ML that has worked.
First, could the Padres have unlocked a future ML impact RP? Maybe enough so to let Hader go as a FA?
Second, pitchers (especially RP) do come out of nowhere at various points in their careers … usually players with good stuff who finally find command and learn how to pitch. A reason even some struggling arms are retained in the system when results are not there. However, in Cosgrove’s case, it is the less frequent late career refinement of delivery and change in out pitch … have to give some credit to not only Cosgrove but to the Padres’ minor league pitching coaches to make that change work.
Yeh, jumping the gun a bit on Cosgrove but the Padres must have seen the potential in the new Cosgrove given he was the one prospect protected last winter for Rule 5 even though his stats were not brilliant.
Time to be optimistic!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 3, 2023, 9:18 amHe's been great. It seems like the team made a pretty big effort to overhaul pitching development with the hiring of Niebla and a bunch of minor league coaches over the last few years. Hopefully Cosgrove is the start of it paying dividends.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 3, 2023, 9:34 amPitching Development is as good as I've seen it atm...dating back to last season.m
Steve Wilson was as good a RP as there was (especially at Petco #1 Home ERA in MLB 1.05 in 2022)..
Cosgrove has been outstanding
Weathers is a solid #5 at least..still young still moldable into > SP
All 3 drafted and developed within
Honeywell while not a Padre draft pick.. is an incredible find by AJP .. we are keeping him healthy and working on him getting back to that "elite" prospect form but as a MLBer now and no longer a spec.. gaining those 5-6 seasons of control on him is going to be pivotal going foward..
All these kidd Wolf/Snider/Iriarte/Snelling/Mazur/Lowe/Williams/ etc etc with Lesko incoming are very encouraging signs for our future..
I mean serious ? Will Cosgrove give up a run in 2023 .. 😆

Cosgrove, Wilson, Weathers, and Carlton are ALL Padres from day 1, giving us the flexibility to spend elsewhere.
Now I'd like to see some everyday players make an impact( are you listening Campusano?).
No more stupid 3,4,5 for 1 deals AJ! Trust the process.

Released by the Tigers and signed by the Padres as a minor league FA.
