"The Opener"
Quote from MrPadre19 on June 1, 2018, 11:48 amSo what do you guys think of this new strategy the Rays are experimenting with?
Will it catch on do you think?
If so.....what ramifications do you see coming from this...especially concerning Stats?

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 1, 2018, 11:51 amIf you have your "best" reliever Close the game why not have a guy "Open" the game?
Especially if you adhere to the adage of scoring first being a big advantage.
If you could have a guy like Stammen and say Yates for instance each start 2 games a week and give you 1 or 2 innings you could conceivably gain the advantage of scoring first(maybe) plus not have hitters get the advantage of seeing your starter a 3rd time through the order "before" he starts to lose it and is replaced by a reliever.
I guess it could make some sense?

Quote from sportwarrior on June 1, 2018, 4:04 pmIt's definitely an interesting concept. Put a tough RH pitcher against a lineup that is top heavy with RH batters, put them down quickly over an inning or two and then pass the baton to your real starter. That means those first 3-6 hitters will be seeing your starter a 3rd time much later in the game and allow that starter to see the ostensibly inferior bottom of the lineup a 4th time. It's a shame the experiment isn't being run with a better guinea pig than Sergio Romo.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 2, 2018, 6:40 amOr start the game with a tough lefty.
Or,Start the game with a submariner like Makita.....then go to Richard for 4-5 innings....then a righty like Yates or Stammen....then your LH Closer.

Apparently all these analytics...and risk vs. reward thinking is causing things like the Sac bunt, pitchout and the hit and run to be dwindling away.

Quote from WindsorUK on June 6, 2018, 8:16 amMaybe this a good way to get Eric Lauer started?
Let Strahm, Yates, Stammen, whoever, pitch the first two innings then bring in Lauer to face the bottom of the order. He seems to have issues with the top guys. Let him get settled against the guys at the bottom? He might be able to get in to the 7th or 8th that way.
Couldn't hurt.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 6, 2018, 1:00 pmThe Padres and others have had “reliever” games like today before....it’s noy new,but does someone take it to the next level and do it 3-4 times a week?
Or start “every” game with a reliever.
If you have a Lefty scheduled to start the game why not have a righty throw the 1st and/or 2nd innings?
I think it’s something that’s gonna happen....probably gradually.
