THE 26

Senzel or Merrifield for 2b would be the only ones that interest me.

If we can’t move Myers he needs to play RF everyday.

I’m OK with Hedges/Mejia at C until Campusano is ready.

So after the signing of Stammen.....how many think we’re done?

How many think there may be a few smaller moves that affect the 26 man?

How many(Henry?) still think we have at least one “big” move coming?

I believe our payroll is maxed out....so unless we can get creative involving a deal that involves Myers I believe our 26 man is already part of the current 40.

I think AJP’s biggest move of the offseason hasn’t happened yet. I still believe he will add another star.

I would love to get Senzel or Merrifield too-I just don’t see it happening. Everyone who is trading a star still has an incredibly high price tag on them. I think it will take at least a year for prices to drop, if they ever do. Every player, no matter whether they are Lindor, Merrifield, Betts, Clevinger or Bryant will require Gore or Patino+ from us or both Lux and May from the Dodgers. All of them. Teams even want top 30 prospects just to take on Myers contract.  Those prices just don’t fly anymore. Therefore I do not see a major trade happening. AJ has already made all of the smaller trades he needs to this year. I think we already have the team we are going to start the year with.

I tend to agree with Jason.  $ is tight now, and it REALLY feels like a game of chicken where other teams would say "yes" to various deal iterations including Gore (no way in hell), or especially Patino.  Even though I'm less high on Patino than some, A) I'm in the minority, and B) UNLESS it's a trade for a TOR SP like Clevenger, really can't "afford" to part with Patino since Zach Davies does not = a TOR SP.

So I'll peg my perfect health 26 now:

SP:  1) Richards, 2) Paddack, 3) Lucchesi, 4) Davies, 5) Lamet, 6/Swing/Long) Quantrill.  With IP limitations all over the place, plus Gore (won't be surprised at all if he arrives in May), Patino, others on way, I really think Pads are going to strategically implement 6 -man rotation at times.  Perfect example would be when playing 12 (or 18) games in a row.  Joey not 3rd best SP, but keeps 1st series from being all RH.

Pen:  Locks =  Closer Yates, 8th-Pomeranz (L), 7th-Stammen, 6th-Strahm (L), "5th" -P. Johnson

Last 2 spots =  Wingenter, Guerra.  Just to be different.  Castillo & Munoz to AAA to knock rust off & work in controlled setting respectively.  Worth noting that only Quantrill & Wingenter can be optioned out of these 8.  Guerra's got great potential, but on a win now team it's going to be a short leash.  Very real chance Pads risk running him through Waivers if he doesn't have a good ST hoping no other team adds his extreme inexperience as RP to their 25-man.

Lineup:  1) Tatis, 2) Pham, 3) Machado, 4) Hosmer-L, 5) Myers, 6) Mejia-S, 7) Grisham-L, 8) Profar-S

Would love an addition like Merrifield that could push Tatis to 3rd, but don't see anyone on roster capable right now.

Bench:  Hedges, Garcia-L, France, Margot, Almonte-S.   Cordero HAS to play daily to make up for lost development time.   Naylor really the same; both to log more OF playing time defensively, and to start tapping into his raw power more in games.  Almonte has 1 option left.

Betts won't.. One yr of control .. All he requires is a coupke players that would be greater than the draft pick Boston will get when he walks next offseason

So is Stammen not being added to the roster yet because there is no hurry to do so or a sign of a pending move/s?

With arb figure exchange deadline looming Friday .. And the 40 man roster full ..AJP is likely trying to make a move or 2.. Extend some arb dudes (we have like 7 or 8) maybe trade some Hedges/Margot/Perdomo etc..?? And probably doesn't want to DFA Guerra or the like to make room for Stammen so look for a 2 for 1 (on the 40) type trade between now and rhen

Or we may just have the "pending physical" delay?

Personally DFA of Margevicius is the move ... but yes ... if Preller can move anyone off the 40 man that he sees as having limited long term value for the Padres first got to try to get some useful future piece.

Not holding my breath for "the big one".

No hurry/worry.  Already was a Padre.  Knows they  need time to clear a roster spot in most beneficial to team way possible

Beginning to seem that all around MLB ... talk of trades is subsiding and the major FA are pretty much off the board. Some minor tinkering maybe still but for the Padres what we see is probably what we get.

So, a question on how the Padres set their INITIAL 26 roster. Most seem to think the best (or potentially best) get the call. However, the season is 6 months long and that initial 26 will continue to evolve due to injury, under performance, need for "rest", mid-season deals. Could that set-up a strategic plan that alters who makes the initial 26? How much does playing time at the start of the season factor into not keeping some players? How much does the open role, versatility influence the 26th man or the 8 RP slot? How much work / development in the minors for some players to start the season benefit the Padres when they are called up mid-season?

I expect some will be "disappointed" as some players are optioned in favor of a player who may not be considered as good.

Likely with position players (like it or not) we will see Hosmer, Tatis, Machado, Pham, Myers playing (to begin the season) the bulk of the games with Mejia / Hedges, Garcia / Profar, Margot / Grisham "platooning". That leaves only 2 slots and a good case for France to be the RHH PH option. So, who is the last position player? Not going to play much. Cordero? Naylor? Cronenworth? ... all LHH.

RP has a base of Yates, Pomeranz (L), Johnson, Strahm (L), Stammen, and probably Guerra (out of options) ... so 2 opens slots and a case can be made for Quantrill as the long man early in the season if they don't see some of the five starters going deep into games. So, maybe 1 open slot. Wingenter? Munoz? Bednar? Castillo? Reyes? Bolanos? ... would be the Padres be better off going with Wingenter (has the ML experience) and letting the Padres manage workload and conduct some more development work with the others TO START 2020 ... expect we will see all them during the course of the season.
